Why wasn't he just called Tatanka? Did they think we weren't going to notice the tomahawk, the red mohawk, the necklace with feathers, the war paint?
They could have at least come up with a better nickname than a simple statement of his ethnicity. Maybe "The Lumbee Brave" or "Warrior Chief" or basically anything would be more creative than "Native American".
Why was there never a wrestler packaged as "Caucasian Mutt"?

Right up there in the redundancy department with The Man They Call Vader. They call him Vader because ... that's his name?

Because the WWF/E have never understood the meaning of subtlety.

Eh, Vince would think we'd think he's related to the Ultimate Warrior if the distinction wasn't made - the war paint and tassels etc

Right up there in the redundancy department with The Man They Call Vader. They call him Vader because ... that's his name? His name is Leon.... just everyone in the world... against Leon's wishes keeps calling him Vader.

I can't believe they called him that. That seems not okay. Like calling a wrestler The Mexican, or The Japanese Guy. Less surprised, more shocked, I guess.

This is a company that less than 10 years earlier had tag teams called "The Wild Samoans" and "The Islanders," and at one point the Samoans were literally identified numerically.

At least Tatanka is actually Native American. Unlike Chief Jay Strongbow, who was some Italian guy from New Jersey really named Joe Scarpa.

Given the time period of his debut, about two decades after people began realizing that "Indian" was an improper term for indigenous people, I wonder if "The Native American" was specifically put at the top of his name to dissuade anyone in the often 20-years-behind world of wrestling from referring to him as a "indian."

Kind of like The Man, Goldberg. As opposed to The ape, Cornelius.

Wasn’t that because of WWE were worried about being copyrighted by Lucasfilm, so referred to him as “The Man they call Vader” as a precaution. That sounds vaguely familiar. I think I also read that they initially were going to have "The Mastodon" be his primary name.
