Wasn’t that because of WWE were worried about being copyrighted by Lucasfilm, so referred to him as “The Man they call Vader” as a precaution. That sounds vaguely familiar. I think I also read that they initially were going to have "The Mastodon" be his primary name. I’ve long wondered why they didn’t just keep calling him Big Van Vader. Was there an issue with the ownership of that name? I do remember early during his WWF run, Davey Boy calling him Big Van in a promo, but that was the only time I remember hearing him called that in WWF.

I think they'd pretty much stopped calling him Big Van in WCW for his last couple years in the company.

Was there an issue with the ownership of that name? I remember hearing that New Japan owned that name, which was why WCW backed off using it.

They probably did it to help Tatanka himself as he always got confused about ethnic groups. Remember in 2006 when he wanted to revenge on the white man then went after Bobby Lashley?
