They created a character to make fun of the left, the right wing news applauded it and so the WWE cancelled it?... It's very confusing.

They created a character to make fun of the left, the right wing news applauded it and so the WWE cancelled it?... It's very confusing. It seems like a situation where WWE wanted its cake and eat it as well. They wanted a character to get heat by adopting a caricature of "the left," but they wanted to keep it within the realms of their fanbase. When right-wing media got on board and started praising it, they realized the baggage that would come with that sort of attention wasn't worth whatever benefits of having the "SJW" character on their show, be it counter-criticism from left and center media, or maybe the fact that it might attract some of the worst aspects of the right wing into their fanbase.

Those are all reasonable, but I think ahead of those, WWE is a company that values optics. Right-wing media praise is one thing; New York Post isn't taken seriously by most people, that attention only means so much. But you get more mainstream sources to report on it? Maybe more mainstream and less political show business publications? That's less desirable. How you think their partner GLAAD is gonna feel about a heel running around talking about wanting a safe space? How badly do you want that stink on you when you're gunning for press coverage for your latest PR work with Girl Up? WWE engages in a lot of typical corporate charity work that seeks causes that the people in upper management positions don't seem to support or care about much at all but which are lucrative for mainstream approval and buy a lot of good will. Letting Gacy keep the character up on NXT if it's starting to get attention undermines a lot of that. There's a reason WWE insisted Retribution wasn't political when it totally was, but with this act, there's way less room for deniability, and if they're starting to make waves in right wing media, it's only a matter of time before more notice comes, and this is one character WWE does not want getting mainstream attention.

Oh he was a heel? Damn they are pathetic. Well, they couldn’t do much else. Gacy was pretty much the kind of self-righteous soapboxer that you’ll encounter online who guilt-trips people for not being angry about everything in the news. If you want to just go about your business, a Joe Gacy will get pissed and say “you’re part of the problem!” And yes, I’m speaking from personal experience. At that point, it stops being about Vince’s conservatism because that kind of character is inherently obnoxious across the aisle. Starr *tried* to get the soapboxer over as a good guy wrestler, and he could only manage to make it a tweener act. That Joe Gacy gimmick was always gonna be a bad guy no matter what company he was with.

Yeah they might have Q supporting wackos running around backstage and we all know they wouldn't put up with that.

It's fine until people know... Seems like it's fine until quite a few months after people know. Ultimately, they are more or less in control when it's coming from the inside. The only person that really let it become a true problem was Drake Worst, and we see how that ended. When it's Fox News writing about it and they can't reign in that sort of attention, then it's a problem they can only stop by shelving the character.

Every time I see this thread, I think it says "Joe Gacy: Sour Boy?" which makes sense since this gimmick is the worst.

Even if we leave politics out of it, it reminds me of Jinder's Man of Peace shtick that he was doing for a few weeks, which in the wacky world of wrestling is absolutely a heel character.

Ugh I hope this doesn't last. It's bad enough that the left vs right mentality is getting worse and doesn't need WWE to throw more gasoline on that fire.

“Oh, no! This gimmick we created as a dog-whistle to wannabe bigots has immediately been embraced by actual bigots! Who could have seen this coming?!?” -WWE, probably who would have thought that would have happened except everyone who remembers Patriot Act Jack Swagger? Don't forget the Forgotten Sons in NXT, especially Gunner (ugh).

Repackage him as Joe Wayne Gacy (No Relation) the wrestling clown. That's how they should announce him during his entrance, too. Joe Wayne "No Relation" Gacy.

It's fine until people know... Seems like it's fine until quite a few months after people know. it was fine until he turned up on camera at a public event wearing a company shirt and left them no room for deniability when it came to his behaviour. If he kept on pushing this BS behind the scenes at the PC, he'd still be there, they've kept Road Dogg, after all.

Took a while for them to be canceled. Mainly more because you never saw Fox News or whomever making a headline about Retribution being Antifa (only fans seem to notice it).
