no, it was much much worse than anything Taz or Eddie have said. I really don't understand why some people get so worked up about things like this. It used to be a staple of wrestling, to have digs at the competition. I can only assume the 20 years of WWE being the only game in town has made people forget that. You and I both know there are PLENTY of things that 'used to be a staple of wrestling' that should stay dead and buried. For me, this is one of them. Comparing this to some of the nasty elements in Wrestlings past is absolutely ridiculous. Come on now.

Agreed for a company that has brought positivity in nearly every other aspect I don't know why they continue to feed the US vs. THEM rhetoric.

I'm getting off track and I'm sorry if I've derailed the thread. I don't have a problem with you thinking all this is good for wrestling. I'm just so over the 'us vs. them' dynamic.

This tweet is not as serious and toxic as people are making it out to be.

This tweet is not as serious and toxic as people are making it out to be. Within the realm of online wrestling fandom, it seems it has been. Obviously this forum is an outlier in terms of how civilized the discussion is as compared to the types of tribalism all over other forums and social media.

Maybe if Tony would stop tweeting, and focus more on getting Nick Cage to fight a giant spider in the third act of my movie, we'd all be.... I don't know where I'm going with this.

It feels so overblown. And I don’t mind digs, companies in all industries do it all damn time. Wrestling is no different.
The only difference is wrestling fans as a whole, are frankly nuts. Even the level headed ones, I can be nuts sometimes. Part of me wonders, as I said earlier, how we would have handled the Monday Night War era, when both companies at varies times were either number one or neck and neck. Because I don’t know if we could handle it today, and WWE vs AEW is not anywhere close to that level of intensity. Because if the internet was at the level it is now back in those days. Fans here would be at war.

So...I just saw the actual tweet itself, somehow not seeing it at the start of the thread..
...is that it? Like, really, is there a follow-up I'm not seeing?

It’s why going on Twitter is a really bad idea. Heck, I post on Reddit pretty damn regularly, and I don’t think Squared Circle is as bad as Twitter.

I always forget how old I am, and how many people who are into wrestling now and fan this stuff were not around for the Monday Night Wars between WCW and WWF, and hell, before that even. I will never have sympathy for a company that spent 10 years telling that that Hulk Hogan was Jesus reincarnated, and then ran out skits calling him The Huckster, or having their announcers constantly rag on the age of their competitors while having Lawler and Piper main event. This is what WWE does; when they're the top, they make like they don't give a shit, while trying to kill all competition, when they weren't Vince and Co tried to make like he was some Mom and Pop company and had his crew constantly knock the competition.

The owner of a entertainment company openly Stating he plans to do better than his direct competition when their shows are airing at the same time is supposed to be controversial?
Look I'm all for getting rid of the toxic elements of wrestling's past, but that pretty much SHOULD be his Outlook
If you're trying to do better than your competitor by putting on a better show and listening to your fan base that's a GOOD thing

I was 13 years old in 1998, and it felt like every damn thing in those days when high speed internet was just barely getting off the ground had to be about what "side" you were on in a battle of which corporation you'd rather give your money to: WCW vs. WWF, Nintendo vs. Sony (vs. Sega), having to like one style of corporate-backed pop music on MTV vs. some other style, etc. No clue if it's still like that with young teens today, but it was dumb and pointless then and if it's still like that now then it's just as dumb.

I was born in 84 and yes that is how I perceived it as well. Legit saw kids fight over Sega and Nintendo. So glad as stated earlier that social media was not a thing of this magnitude in the 90s.

Tony Khan makes a tweet that's just "Hey I can't wait to get higher ratings next week when your show creeps up into my time slot" and that's a bad we need to complain about. WWE cuts off another promotion from its streaming deal talks and it's just "Eh, business, whatever, they need to make money and crush the competition, no point criticizing them for it". The energies here feel weirdly inverted.

The energies here feel weirdly inverted. From a personal perspective, it just seems weird to me to get up in arms when WWE acts like a big business when that is what they are. Literally driven only by money and longevity. It isn't a defense of them just how they have always operated when in front. Me stating in the original post that I wish Khan wouldn't do this is simply that. Be different and continue to build this amazing brand instead of drawing lines in the sand.
