It'll get overlooked thanks to Danielson vs Suzuki but I felt that this match was also an excellent performance. Punk looked the best that he has ever looked and Sydal has been great primarily as a grappler

I really don’t think Suzuki/Danielson overshadowed it, which is incredible on behalf of Punk/Sydal.
Sydal f***ing took it to Punk. If Punk can take it (and it certainly looked that way in this match), that’s the approach his opponents need to have on him. I loved him busting out some old stuff, I love signs of Old Man Punk just spamming the hell out of body slams. He’s looking good.
And Sydal is definitely an unsung hero/AEW workhorse. No doubt about it.

I'm not overlooking that match. That ruled.
Sydal is a god damn workhorse and he is just everything that is advertised. Punk knows how to tell an amazing in ring story and continues to get better and better with each passing match. If that's the objective of this Journey through the ranks then it's successful. He's putting on some bangers.
They put on a clinic out there knowing they had to go out there and show out given what people were expecting and the whole competitive aspect. Absolutely delivered. People should definitely go out of their way to see this one.

Matt Sydal is a very underrated talent and I hope these matches get more people to respect just how good he is.

Matt Sydal is a very underrated talent and I hope these matches get more people to respect just how good he is. Someone on Twitter said Sydal is a utility player and he really is. He’s enough of a name to still mean something against younger, less experienced opponents and you can easily slot him into matches like this and know he’ll pull off what he needed to. And considering these two haven’t faced each other in over a decade, they had great chemistry.

That was a fun match. I’ve enjoyed every Punk match so far. Great story telling Every little moment and move feels like it matters.

Sydal right now feels like he's filling a similar role that early AEW CIMA was filling, where he was the guy whose name means something, and he got some wins of significance, but he was mostly here to put shine on people, like CIMA being Darby's first AEW win, I think.

I always forget Sydal's still pretty good, and I don't know why I keep making that mistake.
Same thing happened with the PAC match.

Punk's best match since he returned. Oh for sure! Feels like he's finally adjusting back in to in ring shape and Sydal was the prefect guy to help him.

Punk's best match since he returned. You know, I was going to try and make a response to that but...no, you're probably right.

Loved this match. Punk is getting his groove back and Sydal was an excellent opponent for him.

Punk looking exhausted and sweaty was nice storytelling in that match, and him yelling "Body slam!" after doing one to Sydal on the apron was funny.

Very disappointed there was no Ian Rotten run-in.

I always forget Sydal's still pretty good, and I don't know why I keep making that mistake. Same thing happened with the PAC match. It's because he's extremely good at being a jobber to the stars. That's exactly what you SHOULD be thinking about people in that role. Hopefully he's getting paid well. He makes people look very very good in loss, and that's way more valuable to the company than if he was just kinda winning a lot aimlessly.
