The most badass Saint Bernard in the world would have been Beethoven instead of Cujo.

This guy would have been bigger. I read a lot of Laymon's books but it was usually when the library had no good King novels. But like others have said, Koontz and Baker would have mostly dominated but the genre wouldn't be as big.

Laymon was fairly big in the UK. But yea in the US he was pretty unknown until after he passed. He was like a good 80s era B level horror movie. Full of gore and what not.

It's hard to tell if anybody would fill the void, because King was basically the rock star of horror novelist. He brought this hype and attention to the medium.

I would like to think that that would lead to Harlan Ellison and Ray Bradbury being more popular, as they are two of my favorite authors. While not strictly horror by any means, they wrote enough stories in that genre.

A 100% decrease in characters that wear chinos and blue chambray work shirts.

While I think King is kind of underrated as far as how f***ing good a lot of his early and mid period writing was, he was hardly the only author putting out great shit at the same time.
He didn’t create the market, he just had the best marketing team. If he hadn’t been there someone else still would’ve found a similar cultural spot.

I LOVE Richard Laymon buy I think there's a few aspects to his style that probably would've limited him in terms of how big he could be. The sheer amount of rape in his work would really get in the way. Same reason Edward Lee could only ever be so big.

The one thing I think that would stop Clive Barker from filling the King void (I say this as a big Barker fan), is that most of his books start out pretty boring. He spends like the first fourth of a book setting everything up. The gradual build is definitely worth the read, but this would test the patience of a new reader who isn't a big bibliophile.

There’s a lot of great modern horror novels today in many genres. The Fisherman, while not for everyone, still haunts me. I think just about everything is King influenced, he’s a presence.
If you’re like me and thought he faded, read Revival. The twist/reveal is a nightmare that approaches Pet Sematary (his best work and one of the best stories ever imo) in terms of scary. He definitely can still dial up his fastball when he wants to.

While not strictly horror by any means, they wrote enough stories in that genre. Harlan was amazing but too snarky and intelligent for the middle of America crowd. Bradbury I still have no clue why he isn't a name everybody knows. King hit that middle of America/Rural/Small Town America vibe that sold him so many books.
