Whatever battle that was taking place was swiftly ended with the "less famous Miz" remark.

There is a difference between confident delivery of generic material and the lowest hanging fruit imaginable and actually being a wizard on the microphone and I hope that their feud shows that and that maybe MJF even learns something.

That was really amazing. I think MJF held up well.
Someone mentioned it earlier but I think the thing that separates the good talkers from the great is authenticity.
When Punk gives a promo it feels like it’s him talking, not just Phil Brooks playing a character. Same with other great talkers: Dusty, Flair, Jake, Austin, The Rock, Foley, Raven and Cena. When they talk it feels like them talking. When Mankind had the interview it felt “real”.
MJF is very good on the mic but at times it feels like he is just playing the character. Jake, Raven and Flair proved you can give great heel promos and sound authentic. Not many can do that and if MJF can acquire that skill he has the potential to be an all time great heel.
Looking forward to see how this all plays out.

I think MJF did fine. Look, Punk is one of the best on the mic, ever. If you go promo-to-promo with him, you’re probably bound to come up short. But I think MJF got some good shots. Particularly the one about Punk coming back for the young guys and a boatload of money . However, there’s one aspect where Punk just totally outclasses MJF. And that’s the authenticity he brings to a promo. MJF just has this air of “puffin’ on a snow”. When you rely so heavily on insider references, even as a heel, it helps to seem a little more genuine. But, in fairness, there’s few who can match Punk in that regard. I agree with a lot of this. I also kind of wonder if some of this is MJF knowing what his role is here. Like, the heel can get wrecked in a promo a lot more safely than a face can.

And that’s one of the key differences that makes MJF a “Less famous Miz” Miz has always been authentic, that chip he has on his shoulder is real, he has a passion I simply haven’t seen from MJF yet. I don’t see that hunger, that intense craving for success, he says he wants to be the guy yet he’s barely tried to win a belt.

I'm the minority here, but I thought MJF was the better of the two. Such a perfect heel, also funny as hell. Regardless, Punk got the last laughs in the end like he should, as he is the good guy after all. I sat thru the whole 20 minutes listening every word from them, ' loved the segment. "Your whole career, you've been nothing but the second best. ~ Whatever it was the you can't see me man or the king of kings. ~ I can assure you now that you're standing IN MY RING, IN MY COMPANY, things will be no different. ~ You may claim you're best in the world... but I'm better than you, AND YOU KNOW IT!" felt such a truthful line. MJF's been one of the #1 guys in the ring and on the mic from the get go and only getting stronger as the years pass.

Welp, it's official. MJF is now LFM (Less Famous Miz) to me. Come to think about it, he is a Miz ripoff.

Your breath smells, you're ugly and your hometown is a dump.
MJF is fine as Burberry Miz, but his mic skills have always been overrated and this kind of showed it. But that was much more like it from Punk.

Welp, it's official. MJF is now LFM (Less Famous Miz) to me. Come to think about it, he is a Miz ripoff. MJF isn't really like the Miz whatsoever imo... especially in ring. While they both have an air of arrogance to them and thinking they're the best... Miz is someone who harkens more on being a "Hollywood Star" and being famous for being himself while MJF is a trust fund baby who quite literally says he was born into wrestling and bred for this as basically a top pedigree. Miz quite literally was not... he's used that in several of his promos to the point he was almost treated like a mutt backstage early in his career. Miz actually had to claw and scratch to earn his pompous ego while MJF was signed on as a prodigy and holds that air of arrogance of himself over anyone he faces. Hence why he is "Better than you and you know it" It's why if MJF and Miz actually had a feud? I think they'd play splendidly off each other OR if they were to team up they'd make a great team.

Your breath smells, you're ugly and your hometown is a dump. MJF is fine as Burberry Miz, but his mic skills have always been overrated and this kind of showed it. But that was much more like it from Punk. I've seen people really hold on to the "Your breath stinks" line without adding the context of him immediately spinning it into a "Probably because you've been kissing so much ass since you've come back" which I thought was done super well. Saying Punk had lost his edge and become more of a PG nice guy version of himself who might as well be talking "Hustle Loyalty and Respect". I just will never understand the "MJF is Miz" comparisons for the life of me. I get Punk used it in the promo tonight but in reality the two guys are very different and style wise in ring they couldn't BE more different from one another. MJF isn't overrated... but he does go for low hanging fruit and it's done with purpose since MJF and Darby have both called him out on it lately. His promo from his Full Gear post-match was amazing. He's proven he can go to that place when he wants. Tonight wasn't the night. And it was imo done by complete design. Punk was always winning that battle in Chicago. Let's see how things continue to develop... especially when we get to the Long Island show.

I think MJF is corny as f***. He’s an “edgelord” heel and I know the whole point is that I’m supposed to hate him, but I just groan at how try hard the whole character is. It’s like a shitty stand up bit. I also am not really feelin face Punk in the mic. I was actually hoping the feud with Eddie Kingston would lead to a turn cuz even before eddie’s incredible promo, I thought punk (the character obviously) was being a big leagueing asshole whining about “he interrupted me.” I guess I’m just not very interested in this feud and would’ve much rather seen a continuation of his feud with Eddie. The “less famous miz” line got a chuckle out of me, though.

That segment was fantastic. MJF had a couple of lines that fell flat but as the heel it worked for me, it just made it feel like he was scratching around for any old insult and on the back foot a bit.
This was light years ahead of any promo segment you will see anywhere else, the 20 minutes it filled absolutely flew over.

Tony Khan: "I'm going to give my best promo guys all the time and free reign to say whatever they want. What could go wrong?"
*Punk and MJF repeatedly reference WWE*
Khan: "****, I need to call my lawer again!"

Good grief that was amazing. HHH and Cena kept taking strays. Just when you'd think that was it, bam there's another that took it another notch.
Now that's how you open a show with a 20 minute promo.

When MJF brought up being “second best” I was so hoping he’d take things all the way back to Punk not being able to unseat Samoa Joe in the ROH days.

I do feel like Punk won. But I do believe MJF more than held his own. Don’t forget, he’s still very young. Imagine what his promo skills could be when he gets older and his character develops even further and has had even more experience in the main event. But either way, that was an all time promo battle. You know the heel shouldn't be getting better of the face?!Thank you! I think we're too used to seeing MJF bowl over guys like Pillman Jr on the mic. But really that was just to set up the progression of MJF moving on to Darby who just shrugged off MJF'S personal attacks and now Punk who is actually capable of beating Friedman at his own game It would be pretty odd storytelling if MJF just obliterated Punk here. You could see at times Max looked legit rattled, I think this is leading to Punk getting his first L

I think my favorite moment of this was the immediate, unmicced aftermath of "Less Famous Miz."
If my lip reading is accurate:
MJF: "YOU MOTHERF***ER!"
Punk: "...Bitch!"

Just got around to watching this and it exceeded any expectations I had.
Everyone seems to love the "Less Famous Miz" line, my favorite was when Punk said the only way MJF would be the #1 guy is if we waited around long enough for Tony Khan to have a daughter that he could marry.
That was next level.
Not a fan of either guy, but was a huge fan of this segment.
Huge props to Tony and AEW for giving it all the time it needed, and for allowing people to talk like themselves. Imagine this same segment under a scripted umbrella.
Do I think MJF's promo's are formulaic and often lame? Yeah. And Punk has never been my cup of tea. In the ring, or out of it.
But this worked, and as said, exceeded what I expected going in.

I enjoyed MJF dragging Punk's WWE past into this only for Punk to turn that around with that brilliant less famous Miz line. Live by the WWE reference, die by the WWE reference. I like that Punk is still using his mic time that he's supposed to use to hype up himself and the feud with MJF to put over Darby and Britt as well. When he inevitably transitions to that wrestler-announcer dual role that Jericho and Kingston have he's gonna be great, nothing better than a genuine fan talking about who they're excited about.
