The Christmas Chronicles with Kurt Russell on Netflix. It even got a sequel. Watched it a few times with different family.

You guys shit talking elf need to get some Christmas spirit. It’s a fantastic Christmas movie. But anyway. To address your question the Christmas chronicles is pretty good. I just like things that are funny or amusing or mildly bearable, so that disqualifies Will Ferrell.

Part of it is how it ages. I remember Elf being meh when it came out but the after a few years it became a new Christmas classic.

I'd say, despite tepid reviews, Krampus was the last great holiday movie.

For now I'd say yes, as (along with Love Actually) it's the latest 'old' movie that my cinema rereleases for screenings in the run up to Christmas.

Well, I think Elf was an overrated movie, just like Will Ferrell starring The Godfather!
Wait...

I always thought it was a pity that the Holiday (2005) with Kate Winslet & Cameron Diaz wasn't a more enduring Christmas hit. Rather than being a contrived painful romantic comedy you might expect from the premise (a woman in America and one in England swap homes for the holiday season) it's actually a charming little film with likable people drawing natural laughs and actual personality growth. Plus Eli Wallach even steals the show in his role to boot. Yep. It's a go to for me every Christmas season. I say this every time but this is my favorite non comedy Jack Black role. He turns it down to a 6 and is just absolutely charming.

My parents really love The Santa Clause and insist on watching it every year. I wish they liked Elf. Or Santa Claus Conquers The Martians. Or Krampus. Anything to get the nightmare to end. The Santa Clause is the shit. The sequels? Good golly ms holly.

Polar express came out after Elf and it seems to get a lot of play. Same with Christmas with the Kranks
I also enjoyed Jingle Jangle last year

It's a credit to the talent of the writer, director, and both performers that it makes an inherently absurd romantic pairing (Jack Black and Kate Winslet?) both work and feel entirely natural.

I think part of the challenge is the splitting of media thanks to streaming. Movies that might have been good theater releases and could have built Elf-like followings are now split among the different streaming services. For example, Noelle on Disney+ or Happiest Season on Hulu.

A Christmas Story 2 should have....
Said no one ever.
And I'll echo the Krampus love. The scene where you see his shadow racing on the roofs legit creeped me out.

The 2009 Christmas Carol with Jim Carrey was pretty good.

Daddy's Home 2 outranks Elf, anyday, for me.

I think the Christmas Chronicles will gradually become a holiday staple. Its sequel much less so.

Elf is great just to watch James Caan suffer through Will Farrell's schtick.
