Hello all!!!!
Happy Fri-YAY!!!!
I love you all and I hope all of you have an extremely fun, relaxing, joyful, and safe weekend!
I had a question about Jerry Lynn. Like Nicole Bass, this man disappeared quicker than a Nutty Buddy at a Nutrisystem program. He did not last long in the WWF at all.
He was first introduced on the Sunday Night Heat before Backlash 2001 (I was there with my boyfriend at the time) where he was extremely hyped. He came into the ring and got on the mic and did his thing where he was talking a bunch of shit and insulting the fans in Chicago, trying to build some heat. I just remember booing him because I was like....who is this guy? He was pretty confident in his abilities and then challeneged for the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship. Crash came out and the match began. I remember there was some pretty okay chain wrestling there and towards the end, the pin attempt exchanges between the two were pretty decent. Jerry ended up walking away from the whole thing with the title due to him pinning Crash and holding onto his tights.
The next time I saw Jerry Lynn was a month and a half later in June where he dropped the title to Jeff Hardy on Smackdown. Later, X-Pac defeated Jeff to get the title.
Am I seriously, seriously forgetting anything, or did Jerry Lynn just gain the title from Crash and not really do anything with it? I don't remember him in any feuds really. I mean, Taka was still there at that point in time and they even gave William Regal an "assistant" in the form of the ultra-racist stereotype of Tajiri, who actually had pretty good ring skill. They could have had Jerry Lynn feud with either man for the title. Hell, while we're at it, he could have had a feud with Crash, with Crash being upset with his loss and demanding a rematch for the title.
To be quite honest, once the whole "Invasion" storyline began to sink it's venomous fangs into the whole affair and it was ALL the WWF focused on at the time, they just abandoned all previous storylines and came up with vile new ones. It's almost like they hit a sordid "reset" button. If you had zero stake in the whole "Invasion" trash, you were shoved to the back burner. Jerry Lynn, who I have to admit was a pretty decent wrestler for the two times I've seen him in action, was put on ice. Whatever heat he built up as far as playing a heel, was shelved. I would I personally would have loved to see him turn face and feud with Hurricane Helms for instance. That was not to be, as he just vanished during the whole "Invasion" angle.
Coming into 2002, the WWF hit another "reset" button, as they started restoring some of the plotlines and angles that were there before the whole stupid "Invasion" angle had taken place (it still wasn't the same no matter what they tried to do, at least to me. The magic was gone as far as I'm concerned). You would have thought that Jerry Lynn would have been re-introduced as this Light Heavyweight who was thirsty for revenge, going after opponents such as Billy Kidman, Tajiri, X-Pac (who was also re-introduced wearing some tacky shorts), Justin Credible, and even Spike Dudley.
Whatever happened to Jerry Lynn? Is he still alive? I did like his moveset and he had a certain cadence to his moves that was somewhat unique. Did he open up a gym/school somewhere in Lakeland, Florida? Is he now on Wall Street? I know the WWF didn't really give him a fair shake and his introductory timing was way off, which I don't want to use that as an excuse for the WWF to have pretty much used him for a few matches and threw him astray.

I know he had a match taped for Sunday Night Heat with RVD that got great reviews but when it aired a lot of it was edited out. Apparently they were told to have a fairly quick match with RVD going over strong but then in the ring they went all out in a back and forth match like their ECW days and got heat from management who didn't want their hot new guy struggling to beat a low-carder.
RVD already had a bunch of heat during the invasion era for being an unsafe worker and busting a lot of guys open hardway during matches but it wouldn't surprise me if Lynn was the one who took the heat for this. Although it's hard to tell if he was really punished because it's not like they were doing anything with him even before that.

His WWF run was worth it just for his promo at Judgment Day.
WAS THAT GOOD ENOUGH FOR YA, JR?

To answer you question on what happened to Jerry Lynn. He retired a few years ago from in ring work. He how an agent in AEW. From time to time you see him break up fights on TV. After his WWE run he had a great run in NWA TNA AKA now known as Impact, the first MLW, and all over the indies. He had a run as ROH champion not long before he retired. Guy was a work horse talent but didn't have much on the mic.

Random thought on Jerry Lynn but I remember in a Lance Storm shoot interview he said he had always heard Jerry didn't go further in WWF and WCW because Eddie and Benoit didn't like him do to a perception that he didn't work hard enough and dance those two didn't like him many people didn't want to work with him

A veteran and solid in-ring guy like Jerry Lynn seems like someone they'd have respected so that's a strange one.

If there was someone who was doomed in the WWF from Day 1, it was Jerry Lynn. Outside of sticking him in the light heavyweight division, they had no idea what to do with him. They couldn't even bother to make him part of the Alliance even though he'd been one of the most dedicated and beloved ECW guys.
Didn't help that his casual out-of-the-ring look was big dorky glasses. He, Barry Horowitz and Brad Armstrong could have worked as brothers.

In my opinion Jerry is one of the most underrated workers. Sure his mic work wasn't the best but he could have a great match with anyone. His early TNAstuff in the x division against AJ is worth a look.

From what Lance said it came from when Jerry was in Japan around the same time they were. Now Lance also said it was something he had always heard that but didn't know if it was true

That Judgement Day promo was so hilarious. This thread reminded me of it and I had to go search for it. It's actually not that bad until the end when he randomly starts getting pissed at JR and says Judgement Day. It was so funny because he talks with this high voice but then at the end when he says "JUDGEMENT....DAYYYYYYYYY!" it sounds like he became possessed by satan or something.

He just came in at a bad time and was lost in the shuffle amongst a sea of other new guys when WCW and ECW folded

Literally all I remember from his run is "Judgement.. DAAAYYYYY!!", and that he made it into Just Bring It. Yes, for some odd reason he did make it into "Just Bring It". Although, I will say that "Just Bring It" was the most outdated roster at that time. Smackdown 1 was extremely outdated when it came out, but No Mercy/Smackdown 2 compensated for it. For 2001, nothing else compensated for it, and the roster was screwed up seven ways to Sunday. Even if they were attempting to emulate the pre-Invasion WWF of 2001, they didn't do a good job on that, as most of the roster at that time was missing from the game. It was just a rushed mess and I'll release a thread on that game this month.

I think it stands as a decent wrestling game in it's own right, and is still fun to play now, it's just unfortunate that JBI sits between Smackdown 2 and 4. Arguably two of the best games in the whole series.

Sadly now a days thanks to OSW Review I can't think of the guy with out him being referred to in a very flippant manner: JerryLynn! (The lads say they do this to mock the shabby treatment Mr. Lynn got during his tenure in the fed.)
