This one has always perplexed me. Where on earth did this idea form? I know he was an active performer at the time-but he was a total no name. It would be years yet before he became a name recognition star, so where on earth did this idea that WWE were about to throw him into their hottest program with their biggest stars emerge from? Particularly since he had no history with Austin, bell the two of them had probably never even met up to then. What’s more, I’ve heard the same rumor about him in WCW; there were a couple of skits setting up Vampiro acting on behalf of a “higher power” that wanted him to recruit a stable, complete with Vampiro arguing with a guy in a hood backstage. But, again, Daniels had no recognition at that time so why on earth would they put him in such a gimmick? I’d really like to know if anyone has a plausible answer for this madness.

Probably just a random rumor someone like Scott Keith or Herb Kunze started or even just a random fan on a message board. A LOT of stuff like that was peddled around back then and treated like fact.
The IWC might not be perfect today but it was like the wild west back then. Just a free for all of bullshit.

Has anyone like Bruce Pritchard or Russo confirmed this? Or has it always just been a rumour, has Daniels every said it was true or denied it?

Idk how it started but I feel like it's fair to basically guarantee that having a debuting Daniel's in the role would be one of the worst booking decisions of that decade. I mean, I can see that just getting absolutely no reaction from anyone. Good or bad.

This whole idea was probably spread by Daniels himself in an effort to get his name out there.
Obviously, the actual plan was for Curry Man to be the higher power, but it was decided that someone Hot, Spicy, and Taste's Great couldn't be that evil, hence the shift towards Vince.

I can't believe it was ever seriously considered.
WWE has made plenty of questionable storyline decisions over the years, but I think they would realize that revealing a small, unknown guy as the HP would have led to the mother of all Conway pops and killed the storyline overnight.

Yeah, I think the Fallen Angel gimmick in the Attitude Era does have potential, but that's the sort of deal you introduce with vignettes leading up to him beating other midcarders when he arrives, or being unveiled as an Undertaker protege (even though he'd probably just end up in the light-heavyweight division regardless since he'd look tiny next to Mideon, Viscera, and the Acolytes). Also, you'd probably want to be able to look into the future and realize how much cooler he looks bald, since this is what Daniels looked like in May of 1999.

I had assumed this rumor just came from him being probably the most widely known indy guy at the time with a gimmick nickname that was sort of in the Undertaker wheelhouse, plus the early internet wrestling community to get things spreading.

This is a reminder that the Higher Power was originally going to be revealed the night after Over the Edge. It was really the final 2 weeks that ramped up the hype and speculation to the degree that it was.

I never bought it as they did the angle where the Higher Power revealed himself to Austin who was pissed off and it would have to be someone important that the crowd already knew otherwise no one would have cared who he was.

Prichard is the one who started the rumor, seems to weird and specific to not have some truth to it. What I think is weird about it though is if Russo was adamant about making him the higher power and Vince nixed it that they never hired him for anything else if Russo was that high on him.

Booking a complete nobody into the biggest angle in the company definitely sounds like something Russo would do.

He also was a jobber for the Hardys during a Chef Boyardee commercial. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mm2AhLYVeak(You can kinda see him, even though he's not the focus of the ad.)

It's been a while since I watched the lead up to that but the members of the Corporate Ministry had been referencing the Higher Power in promos which felt like at some point he would have been revealed.

The first time I ever heard of Christopher Daniels as the Higher Power was on Bruce Pritchard’s podcast. The IWC rumor I heard back in the day was Don Callis as the Higher Power, who was already in the Federation at the time as The Jackyl.

I remember reading Don Callis and Jake Roberts. Both would have been great choices, but I don't think Jake was in any kind of shape for that in '99.
