It doesn't surprised me that Randy Orton was in the mix to be a potential winner, but I do find it shocking that Riddle was considered to be the front runner to win until it was changed to Brock Lesnar as it feels like Riddle's ceiling has been established as upper midcarder.
With that said, it's refreshing to read that apparently behind the scenes they have hopes for him moving into the main event picture after the dissolution of RKO-Bro and it makes me even more intrigued as to what they plan for Lashley at "Wrestlemania" as I'd convinced myself that it was all but certain that he'd be facing off against either Seth Rollins or Kevin Owens or both in a triple threat match.

Like, I was looking at this yesterday: This should be the actual card for Wrestlemania #LashleyAll

Meltzer on the Observer boards downplayed this rumor saying it may have been discussed but was never serious to where it was definitely going to happen. He also says as of now Lashley-Rollins and Lashley-Riddle are not the Mania matches. So Sasha AND Seth are getting iced out of Mania despite their over ness. How fantastic. 🤦♂️

The fact they don't know what'll happen with the WWE Championship match at Wrestlemania this deep is wild. As expected of today's WWE tho. Meltzer said the match is supposedly locked in, he just wasn’t told what it is yet.

Riddle was gonna win the Rumble….but then he got high.
(It’s better if you hum the tune, I promise.)

This was taken from a Facebook page I assume the same story so take it for what's its worth or if anyone can confirm/deny this then please do so.

Meltzer is still saying it might have been suggested that Riddle win at one point that it never really was the plan.

The last two paragraphs sound like 100% premium smark bait although I'm sure some will bite. For starters, "another report." It's interesting that they named the source for the first report but not the second. Report by who? That part wasn't Mike Johnson. It wasn't Meltzer/SRS/Keller/PWI either. It sounds like something Wrestlevotes or one of those type of sites would dream up and run with for clicks.

With Brock still pushing the title for title idea, I wonder if they're really gonna go for it. Then I'd expect a Ronda/Becky/Charlotte title for title triple threat rematch to be the other night's main event.

It 100% should have been Riddle. Get the title on Orton and send this match to the moon
Nice going, WWE.

Now I'm not so upset Brock won. Seriously. Hell, I'd have accepted Shane winning if the other option was Riddle.

Riddle doesn't do much for me, honestly. Current Brock also largely stokes indifference, but eh.

Not a fan of Riddle at all but I'd have taken that over Lesnar ten times out of ten. At least it would have been interesting, or unpredictable, neither of which the Lesnar win were in the slightest.

Boy remember the stories about Vincent K McMahon and how when someone won the world title he already knew the day and arena they would lose it.
Now his son doesnt know what the main event of his biggest show of year in advance of the match that is supposed set up said main event.

Thank goodness that didn't say Mustafa Ali. That would've been super duper awkward.

Definitely smarkbait in that report. Shane doesn't need to be built for a Saudi show, he win the world cup there! He's the best in the world, he's as over as it gets. Like Bret in Canada, Punk in Chicago or Ultimate Warrior in parts unknown.

To add another aspect to this, Fightful is saying that the people they spoke to never heard of Matt Riddle winning the Rumble at all.
