I assume he only didn't take anything because he learned the bank didn't have rings.
On Wednesday, February 02, 2022, at approximately 1623 hours, officers from the DeLand Police Department were dispatched to Florida Credit Union (1735 N Woodland Blvd, DeLand, FL 32720) in reference to an armed robbery in progress (case #DL220000684).
When officers arrived on-scene, contact was made with witnesses who stated that a subject (believed to be a male by their tone of voice) wearing a “sonic the hedgehog mask” entered the bank displaying a hammer and demanding money from the teller. While demanding cash from the teller, the suspect then struck the teller’s window with the hammer as he continued with his demands.
After being confronted by a bank employee, the suspect fled the location on foot traveling towards the west side of the building and then north on Woodland Blvd. The suspect was last observed wearing a black hoodie, black pants, carrying a black or grey backpack or duffle bag, and a mask resembling “sonic the hedgehog”. DeLand PD, Volusia Sheriff’s Office, and Air One participated in a search for the subject with negative results. An arrest has not yet been made and this incident is currently under investigation. Update, 4:45 p.m. Feb. 3:
Florida Credit Union Assistant Vice President of Branch Operations Brian Leatherman said no one was hurt, there was no damage to the building or windows, and no money was stolen during the attempted armed robbery.
“Everybody is safe, nothing was taken, and local police are on it,” Leatherman said.
