I’m not a fan of the idea that smiling is inherently a lame trait. There’s nothing the f*** wrong with someone being outwardly happy. If booking them like lame-os is the problem, then the answer isn’t “Don’t smile”, it’s f***in’ “Don’t book them like lame-os”. CM Punk is one of the happiest looking guys in wrestling right now, and nobody’s telling him to frown on everyone, and that’s because he’s booked good. I don't think anyone's really saying that, though. It's more that everyone having to be smiling and happy not because it's part of their character to do that, it's because everyone has to be that way to keep networks and advertisers happy so it doesn't come off like they're potentially scaring kids. Like as though parent groups will complain if Bron Breakker is a bit more intense than anyone else. It adds to the whole perception of WWE being not a wrestling company with wrestling matches and superstars but a content mine where the content has to fit the standards of the people actually paying for that content. And comparing anyone to Punk right now seems unfair because of the outside-the-ring connotations of it but even he isn't happy because that's his character, he's happy because he found his love for wrestling that was basically beaten out of him. He's had a lot more angrier or concerned moments because of the MJF feud. If you want to make that sort of comparison, 99% of Tay Conti matches have her smiling and waving to the crowd until the story calls for her not to be.
