Its weird... why care now about quality control and not the past 2 decades or so? I think that may have something to do with the new owner, some theme park company or something.

Al Jean now worried about his job apparently My speculation is that it’s Matt Selman is running the show with Al Jean now. In years past, Selman’s episodes were always the highlight of the season. I give him all the credit.

Yeah, Selman is now joint showrunner, which explains the uptick in quality. I could be imagining things, but I’d swear I read Selman is carrying the bulk of the workload now despite Jean still being co-showrunner. And I stand by the opinion that the show has always been entertaining, just missing the magic of the early years. It definitely evolved from story based sitcom to joke machine sitcom, but it’s still fun to watch for the most part

So I caught the episode "My Teacher and an Octopus" for the first time today, the one that introduced Bart's new teacher. It was amazing. Lisa was actually likeable and a bit badass in the underwater scenes, I really connected with Bart too, he was finally shown in a vulnerable light again and have the stupidity be a front for something else. I was in college with a friend who fell for our teacher and the minute her husband came into the picture, he hulked out too. I like their chemistry together too, hope it's a less antagonistic one than what Bart and Edna had.

This happens every so often. Every couple of years someone comes along and says "The Simpsons are good again! No, for realsies!". And you sit down and watch a couple of episodes. And yes, sometimes the show has improved enough to be classified as "mediocre and forgettable", but usually they're just wrong, and it sucks like always.

The focus on supporting characters has breathed new life into the show the past couple of years. Fleshing out Moe, Smithers, Comic Book Guy, Super Nintendo Chalmers, and Shauna has been fantastic for the show.
I haven't watched a new Simpsons episode in a very long time, but that's encouraging. Also interesting because there was a proposed spin-off around the time of 22 Short Films which would have been a series of shorts delving into side-characters' lives.

This Sunday's episode, "Lisa the Boy Scout", may honestly be one of the craziest episodes of all time. Despite the title, the episode is actually more a meta breakdown of the series itself, right down to revealing how the show supposedly predicted everything.

Maybe this season we'll finally find out what Homer did to get kicked out of Riverdale.

I'd say Marge and Homer continue to be the most interesting characters on the show - as the OP points out with the specifically referenced episode. The expansion of depth for the side characters has definitely helped. Where the show continues to struggle is the kids - Bart and Lisa written as either adults trapped in kid bodies, or worse as extreme parodies of their most extreme traits. In the classics years, both would encounter adult situations and even adult viewpoints - and take adult stands - but always from the base of being kids. Bart especially is either a literal sociopath or cynical void - though a recent episode introducing a new teacher at least tried to capture an awkward and innocent schoolboy crush - so maybe they are at least trying to address that. I think part of my viewpoint against Homer and Marge is coloured by how painful it is to hear Julie Kavner do Marge's voice these days. I can totally understand why they don't want to kick Julie Kavner to the kerb, but she's 72 voicing a 40 year old woman, and she SOUNDS 72. She actually sounds rougher than my smoker grandma did.

This week's was "Not It", first of two Treehouse of Horror episodes, with this one focused entirely on It. And it's a solid episode overall. Not just as a parody but an interesting alternate universe episode.
The proper Treehouse episode is Sunday and includes a Death Note parody. And holy cow they are going all out with it.

Your mileage may vary on the Simpsons going ambitious with these experimental episodes, but I appreciate the effort.
