It's 2022 and there has never been an English world champion. That's a bummer. Is it the talent or bad luck?
Bulldog was too unreliable, I guess, but potentially could've had a reign in the New Generation. Wasn't watching at the time but I believe Wade Barrett was too injury prone. And, again, I wasn't watching but Regal was also close to getting the title in 2008, right?
Our only hope is BUTCH (and Ridge, I guess).

Regal seemed like he could have gotten it if not for one of the worst-timed suspensions in wrestling history.
Barrett had the charisma, and while there's an argument that he never had everything lined up at the right time, he's also one of the saddest and most blatant examples of WWE never actually trying to capitalize on a wrestler when he was red-hot.

Wade Barrett could and should have been one if they didn't f*** up the Nexus storyline. Just have that run to Mania 27 with Barrett winning the title between Summerslam and Mania.
But that's the only one. Everyone else wasn't good enough or the timing wasn't right.

I HATED the stupid boyhood dream thing, and thought Bulldog was overdue.

Regal was too much of a man to be World Champ.
Seriously, Regal not champ is criminal. His heel work is some of my favorite to enjoy across all promotions.
I was a huge Bulldog fan when I was a kid, and really do enjoy his body of work as an adult, but looking back, his timing was always off. Too many better choices in any of his Entertainment runs. Having Cornette as his mouth piece in the mid-90s was a smart choice, but he couldn't compete with any of the other top stars of his time.

Regal seemed like he could have gotten it if not for one of the worst-timed suspensions in wrestling history. This is the answer. He was a huge over heel and it was like they were getting ready to put the strap on him and then he got the suspension. I can't even imagine the promos he would of done as champ

If he wasn't so hard luck and injury prone I think Barrett probably would've got a title run eventually as he really had all the tools. I think he more going for him then the upper midcard World Champions of the early 2010's like Ziggler, Swagger, and Del Rio. It is surprising there has never been an English champion. I guess at least they had a Women's Champion with Paige but surprising not with the men although if you think about it other then Bulldog and Barrett there really hasn't been many wrestlers from there you would consider World Title material. Don't see it happening with Butch (especially with his current gimmick anyways) and Holland either.
Come to think of it I don't think there's ever been a Japanese Champion which is even more surprising considering how many good wrestlers come from there. Asuka won the Women's but for the men Yokozuna was only billed from there and Nakamura has never won a big belt. I don't know if it has to do with Vince's descent but I've noticed Irish wrestlers usually get treated very well in WWE. Balor, Sheamus, and Becky have all got strong pushes with the latter two in particular getting very good treatment. He was never a main champion but Finlay was also always booked pretty well and had a good spot on the card especially when you consider he was in late 40's-early 50's at the time.

Bulldog and Barrett are the only ones I could've seen it happen with.
I suppose Regal could've had a JBL type run with it in 2008.

Honestly I was hating the Regal mad king run so, while it'd certainly be better if he hadn't had any issues, I never exactly minded in isolation that it got cut short.

Bad News Barrett not getting a short run when he turned face is one of many missed booking opportunities

Has there even been enough English guys who could have been? There’s been two. So, it’s really not that hard to believe.

I agree with Barrett on something he said on Ride Along.
It should have been him, but it REALLY should have been PAC.

If an English wrestler had the Mr Arse gimmick, that right there is WWE Championship calibre material.

You had Paige on the women’s side in 2014, though it was at a time when the division wasn’t enjoying the level of respect and recognition it would later enjoy.

the big issue with Barrett was at his most hated dude was far too green for the position.
He had good matches against Cena and ONLY Cena... his matches during the Nexus were mostly awful otherwise.
Especially the ones with Orton which was the true nail in the coffin for his main event run, and not anything that Cena did.
When he finally got it all together the WWE had already pretty much decided he was injury prone and weren't going to push him to the main event.
---
Regal's mad king run ending with the title is the obvious ending except in the middle of it he got the wellness strike... but with his other health issues I'm not sure how long he'd actually have at the top.
