About a year ago, I created a thread about mattress shopping. I finally bit the bullet this week and ordered a new one that arrived today. I spent the evening disassembling the old bed and frame as I bought a new frame for this mattress (it doesn't require a box spring and I'd need mountaineering gear and an oxygen tank to sleep it would be so damn tall with frame, box spring, and 14 inch mattress all together). I've unboxed the new mattress and am letting the expand for the next day or two.
I'm so freaking excited over sleeping on this thing Saturday night. It's official, I'm old. If 23 year old me would see 37 year old me, he'd be highly disappointed over this development.

You have way too strong opinions on mattresses, but you're gonna be spending a 1/3 of your life on it....so, something. 23 year old you had too strongly held mattress opinions.

We spend a third of our life sleeping,it might be no a no frills purchase but finding a good bed is something that should be worth getting amped up over.

Literally went through the same thing myself a couple of years back. I was shocked at how satisfying it was buying my own brand new bed.

Younger me would want to punch me.
Lucky for me, I'm in the best shape of my life, so I'd kick his ass.

Getting pants and socks for Christmas is brilliant now Sister in law bought me a 40 dollar pair of socks. 14 year old me would have thought it was the lamest gift ever 40+ year old me's response to 14 year old me? "Hey kid, eat shit. These socks feel like I'm wearing the best most warm and comfy slippers ever even when I'm actually wearing boots" God I love Christmas socks/boxers/pjs and the like. It's always something way more expensive than I'd ever buy for myself and most of them time they are "Holy shit this feels GREAT"

Somewhere out there must be a world class sockmaker able to talk for hours about the perfect sock fabric and sock stitching technique, and I bet it's a fascinating listen with the right experience.

Progressive can't stop you from turning into your parents... Heh, my 75 yr old dad doesn't even sleep on the kind of bed I do. Then again, he doesn't have Bethlem Myopathy like I do, so his back was never the pile of useless shit my back is. I now have a bed similar to hospital bed, where I can now sleep sitting up. It's the only way I can sleep through an entire night and not wake up with a back that has seized up and screwed up for most of the day. It's possibly the greatest purchase I have ever made. One of my kids who inherited the same condition from me has also purchased such a bed after seeing what it did for me and the other, who slept in my bed when he housesat for us for a couple of days, now is seriously considering getting one of his own as well.

Sometimes I wonder if getting one of those hospital beds is the thing I need. My ankylosing spondylitis has long hit the point where my back is hunched forward, as is my neck. Lying down flat on my back is flat out impossible. To top it off, lying on my side is also uncomfortable in different ways. Lie on my left my shoulder gives me grief, on my right it's my hip. And there's my swollen clavicle bones where at nights when I lie down ache on either side. So I think having a hospital bed like deal can help a bit, though there's still my neck.

Never be cheap when buying a mattress or shoes. Your joints and back will thank you in the years to come.

People need good mattresses, man. Nothing to be ashamed of for realizing that’s not something you should take for granted.

People need good mattresses, man. Nothing to be ashamed of for realizing that’s not something you should take for granted. Definitely not something to take for granted, Like, during the first two years of the pandemic, I decided to sleep on a couch next to the front door. Did it because my parents often got careless if someone rang the doorbell and they'd answer going outside without a mask. The couch didn't fit me, and in hindsight it caused even more sleeping problems than I already have, which eventually cumulated in me getting a nose bleed that lasted hours, and doctors thought I had a heart attack and/or stroke. Back on my own bed, I no longer wake up every hour or so, so definitely don't take for granted the things that are part of your routine.

23 year old me would be stoked that I could afford a brand new mattress without worrying that it would completely f*** my budget for the next several months.
