First: Pacifica Northwest who appears to the stereotypical stuck-up snob rich kid who would probably be more happy in Beverly Hills rather than an outwood location like Gravity Falls (voiced by Jackie Buscarino who hasn't done that much notable voice over work but was a producer during the whole run of "Steven Universe"). Well she does do voice work on Steven Universe as well. She is the voice of Vidalia. Ironic though that those characters have kind of connection, having a relationship to the most shithole dads on each show. The father of Vidalia's first kid he is a terrible dad and person in general. Similar to Pacificia's dad, though they are horrible in very different ways.

Episode 8A: The Fence Sitter
B. Overall, an entertaining segment. Really liked the variation on the "Two Tickets" trope at play here (leading to a funny sequence of events), it was interesting to see how for some decision the Gummis go for the voting route (would have actually thought that Gruffi would make the decisions for everyone), liked the bird's (forgot its name) colorful design and loved how Cubbi came through with a solution in the end.
-
Do...do those bugs have shoes on them?! Did Grammi just kill a bunch of probably sapient insects?! Yikes, no wonder the bird was completely horrified about that.
-It is a bit strange that a few episodes ago, the adults considered Sunni to be still young enough to have to play with Cubbi outside, yet here she is apparently old enough to vote along with the adults. But perhaps she is just at that threshold between child and adolescence right now.
-There's a book entitled "Scarecrows Of The World"? Now there's a researcher that probably has found one of the most niche things to do a whole book about.
Episode 8B: Night Of The Gargoyle
B+. While the previous segment was more humor-based, this one is a bit more on the actiony side with a rather scary trickster antagonist in the gargoyle (certainly not like the gargoyles in a later Disney Afternoon show). Watching the Gummis try to save King Gregor's life is quite intense to watch and I also love how Calla again plays a more active role in proceedings. Definitely a bit of a better segment than the previous one.
-None other than June Foray provides the Gargoyle's voice and again it speaks for her VA prowess that one would never guess that it's the same actress.
-Really speaks a lot for King Gregor that he would put up a present that he himself finds ugly just so that nobody of his subjects feels upset. Really a nice monarch. Though he should probably invest some of the kingdom's treasury into renovating his "old castle"
-Now I wonder where Duke Igthorn got this Gargoyle from....oh well, since he got it back he should probably ask for a refund.
-I know it's a common expression in English but I think when I watched this episode for the first time in English several years ago, that was the first time the begging "Pretty please, with sugar on top?" was heard by me.

Episode 8: Irrational TreasureB. Going down more into a Dan Brown/National Treasure type of story instead of a mythology-based one with this episode about the 8 1/2th president. No issues from my side since this episode was quite good mainly due to Mabel's attempts at being serious with her quirkiness ultimately finding the solutions to the various riddles (which were quite good), Quentin Trembley was a neat, goofy character and all in all the episode moved along at a good pace with some fun humor thrown in (thanks to the duo of Deputy Durland and Sheriff Blubs who make quite the good combo but also the weird customs of Gravity Falls like the law allowing you to marry woodpeckers). The only strange part was Stan's sorta/kinda B plot being too underdeveloped to be any kind of real B plot so it would have been better IMO to keep it either out of the episode altogether or just showing him in the stocks at the end (Mabel's president key would have still made sense in that case). Still, it was a pretty good episode. -Ooooo, Pacifica, how dare you insult Mabel like this! You fully deserve getting the truth broken to you by Dipper. And hopefully you will never get any redemption though that seems highly unlikely. And although it is not directly mentioned, we meet her parents in this episode (I wonder how many plastic surgeries her mother had overtime). -Yeah, this episode is perhaps the most interactions we had between Deputy Durland and Sheriff Blubs. It is interesting looking at it now from the POV of Alex's original intention for them in that you can interpret their relationship either way: as two buddies who love hanging out or as a romantic couple. Too bad that it still took Disney a couple of years to be more open about that type of relationship being portrayed on screen. -Oh hey, Gideon. Haven't seen you in a while...though your appearance, just like Stan's B-Plot, was utterly pointless. -*sigh* If only those revelations about some US presidents and landmarks were true....

Episode 9: The Secret Of The JuiceA. Well, finally one of the biggest secrets in the show is revealed early on: the recipe for the Gummiberry Juice. Surrounding it is a very good episode featuring an intriguing story regarding the recipe (Grammi having to find someone who can cook it should she ever be absent, Sunni's lack of interest at first and how she eventually comes to successfully create the recipe and being a worthy successor to Grammi, Igthorn's plan to have a whole gummi berry juice factory etc.) with some funny scenes and good character development. Season 1 continues to be quite the good starting season for this show. -I have a fond memory of this episode for one reason. I would be surprised if that wasn't common in the US as well but I remember having this and the next episode on audio cassette as a child (i.e. using scenes from the episode while having a narrator link the elements that need visual explanation) which is how I knew of it well before watching it on TV. Also had several audio cassettes of some 1987 Turtles episodes which I listened to more I admit. -Really like how Calla and Sunni get to interact more and more as the show went on and how Sunni doesn't mind participating in some things like archery and swordfighting with Calla (mostly because I think that Sunni would rather learn more about "stereotypical" princess stuff). Goes to show that by this point, they love hanging out. -It is a neat tradition that the recipe is not written down but meant to be handed down orally and learnt by heart (which makes sense considering the danger it would bring if it falls into the right hands). Though I would imagine it taking a long time to be learnt that way, given the specific amount of different-colored berries to remember. Also wondering whether there is a real life cooking recipe that requires a certain stir technique. -Well, Gruffi, Mr. Know-It-All, if everyone else is out of contention for recipe successor, then what do you suggest? Keeping Grammi locked up in Gummi Glen so that there will never be a chance for her to be abducted? -Even TMS can make mistakes as evident by Sunni's hairdye only appearing when it is introduced and at the very end of the episode, yet her hair remains its normal color in between. -The gummi berry juice factory...an interesting concept that would make a reappearance in the series finale.

Episode 9: The Secret Of The Juice-Well, Gruffi, Mr. Know-It-All, if everyone else is out of contention for recipe successor, then what do you suggest? Keeping Grammi locked up in Gummi Glen so that there will never be a chance for her to be abducted? This...is actually a gag line on an upcoming episode. EDIT: Oh, I mentioned that. EDIT 2: And Grammi says "Hokey smokes!" the same episode.

Episode 9: The Time Traveler's PigA-. I guess I should have known that it was only a matter of time before the show hit the subject of time travel as well. Have to say that the idea of the measuring tape as a time machine is pretty creative and the episode itself is pretty strong on both humor (Dipper's numerous failed attempts at fixing his mistake causing Wendy to have a black eye everytime, the "witch hunt" during their second attempt and the highlight being that whole "Oregon Trail" reference/parody which was a hoot XD) but also character moments (mostly for Dipper ultimately choosing his sister's happiness over perhaps getting together with Wendy). Regarding the latter, I like that this episode didn't make Dipper into too much of a jerk (I mean, his main reason for going forward into the future to look for Mabel being over Waddles is based on him experiencing similar incidents with her so it makes kinda sense) and immediately Mabel and Waddles have an adorable chemistry together. The only thing that bothers me a bit about this episode is Blendin Blandin getting punished at the end for things that he had nothing to do with. The only thing that he did wrong in this episode was leaving his tape measure time machine unsupervised but him getting punished for stuff that Dipper and Mabel was unfair. Perhaps if he had been portrayed as more of a jerk beforehand, this would have felt better but as of this episode, I felt more sorry for him and it put a smudge on an otherwise great episode. -Basing the episode title off of the book "The Time Traveler's Wife"? Interesting choice. -Well...anyone who sees this and whose first reaction is not to give her a comfort hug has probably a heart of stone... -"I, the great Dee Bradley Baker, who has a prolific voice actor career...am now relegate to voicing a pig? How could I have sunk so low?" (Just kidding, of course) -Hmm, Stanford looked quite good in his younger years: -Good observers may have noticed that Blendin Blandin actually appeared in the background in the first three episodes. Now, this episode gives us an explanation for him appearing in those (fixing all the anomalies that Dipper and Mabel caused as part of his punishment).

(yeah, haven't posted in a while, but I will and want to continue with this)
Episode 10A: Sweet And Sour Gruffi
B. Another good segment. Liked the whole gimmick with the "Please" and "Thank You" spell having a sort of Jekyll & Hyde effect on Gruffi as well as his characterization in this episode. Sure, he may be gruff but in this segment it was understandable what with their dwellings being visible from the outside and everything. Watching these early episodes it is really neat how Gruffi's well gruffiness comes not from a place of being a sourpuss in general but just from being essentially the gummi in charge and having to do all the tough decisions. And this segment is definitely a proof of that.
-As @jmfabianoprl mentioned, this segment featured some "Rocky & Bullwinkle" references with Grammi referring to Gruffi as "Mr. Know-It-All" and even exclaiming "Hokey Smokes" at one point.
-Hmm, that raincoat worn by Sunni seems kinda modern for the medieval period this show takes place in. Then again, most of what the Gummis know is pretty advanced for this period so it may make sense in that regard.
-Mental note: don't ever rip off a page from the Great Book Of Gummi or else Zummi will go medieval on your ass.
Episode 10B: Duel Of The Wizards
B. Well, another good segment makes a good episode in my book. Although it feels a bit much to have another segment focused on Gruffi and Zummi, the introduction of another magician in Dom Gordo Of Ghent made for a great foil to Zummi and their magic "duel" was fun to watch. Kinda wished we would have seen more of Dom Gordo down the line but that was not meant to be (really would have liked to see his realm).
-"Ha, you think this will face me? I am sure I can find a role in an amphibian-based show some years down the line in this form."
-Bob Holt, who voiced the Giant in "When You Wish Upon A Stone", returns for another role as Dom Gordo. As mentioned before, he might have had more appearances in this show if he didn't meet his untimely death during the first season.
-Well, no more cider for you two. XD
-Also like the lesson learned in the end that this whole dilemma could have been avoided if Dom would have just taken up Zummi on his offer for help and that Dom learned something from it. Another reason why he should have probably gotten another appearance.

(yeah, really lagging in this project so far, so I decided to kick my butt and hopefully do more of a regular output moving forward. Especially since I want to do three rounds of this before, maybe, during the fourth round in May, it will be the time that the modern show will be my rewatch of Amphibia)
Episode 10: Fight Fighters
A. What can I say about this one? It is both a very good episode and also a wonderful loveletter to video games (especially the 16-bit era beat 'em ups / fighting games). To count all the various beat em up tropes they hit would crash the scope of this short review probably but each one of them brought a smile to my face. Rumble McSkirmish brings a lot of fun to the episode as well and even the B-Plot with Mabel trying to cure Grunkle Stan of his fear of heights does not weigh down the episode at all (compared to the previous Mabel/Stan B-Plot in "Dipper vs. Manliness"). Kudos also for the compromise Dipper and Robbie came up with at the end in moving forward with them both not wanting to lose Wendy. So yeah, the whole ode to various gaming tropes makes this one a definite highlight of Season 1.
-My Top 5 video game trope mocks in this episode: 1. Rumble punching the rich kid's car and that kid exclaiming "Oh, my car!" 2. Dipper namedropping turkey legs, pizza boxes and gold rings as traditional power-ups 3. Rumble's idea of standing still being in his idle animation 4. The beautiful pixel art style in general 5. The credits scene being a big Super Mario Bros. 2 reference.
-While I normally adore Mabel...she got what she deserved at the end. Doing that to someone that suffers from acrophobia is not cool (although it did help Stan in the end).
-The pixel art in this episode was done by Paul Robertson who also did pixel art for video games like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game and Fez.
-Rumble was voiced by Brian Bloom who is kinda prolific in his involvement in the Call Of Duty series of games
-Wondering if for a short while after this episode got released, "Why you ackin so cray-cray?" became a popular phrase to utter in real life.

Will have to look for that going forward, don't remember him saying it so far.
Episode 11A: What You See Is Me
B. While the story of "Main character learns that just because someone has a disability doesn't mean that they are helpless" is probably a tale as old as time, it does not mean that the episode cannot be charming. And the reason the episode pulls it off is because of Trina who is a very likable character and again someone I wish they would have brought back for 2-3 more appearances down the line. She is definitely the highlight of this segment and I find it interesting that they chose Tummi to learn this lesson (I dunno, when presented with this scenario, my thought would have gone to using Gruffi for this scenario). Add to that some funny interactions between Trina and the Ogres/Igthorn, then you have an entertaining 11 minutes in your life.
-Trina is being voiced by Patricia Parris, a name I didn't know until this segment but who has had quite a prolific career with Disney. Not only did she voice some famous Disney characters for read-along storybooks (like the Blue Fairy, Lady, Alice etc.) but she is someone we will encounter again in other Disney Afternoon shows.
-How Tummi evaded that ogre trap is something I would interpret as him being smarter than he appears to be normally.
-Confirmed...ogres are taking a bite of gum gum regularly.
-Interesting that if you can smooth-talk Igthorn long enough, he will leave you alone for the rest of your life.
Episode 11B: Toadie's Wild Ride
C. I guess, they weren't that brave enough to go all the way and name it "Mr. Toadie's Wild Ride"? Anyway, this is the first segment of Gummi Bears that I would consider only decent or meh. Perhaps it is mainly because the next season featured another "Toadie getting thrown out of Drekmore" segment that I liked much better compared to this one. This one didn't really do much for me with its sorta "The Boy Who Cried Wolf"-style episode and not much in the way of memorable or funny scenes. It wasn't bad but just not that memorable for me.
-I wonder if somebody on the Internet ever used that one for a "...% triggered" type meme post.
-OK, how is Igthorn getting one small barrel of Gummiberry Juice spell doom for everyone? Is he somehow able to reverse engineer the juice ingredients that I missed or something?
-I wonder if the aftereffects of Toadie drinking too much juice are only for ogres or for humans as well?

Looking in the future, get ready for an episode with an inexplicable abrupt ending and Igthorn {Spoiler}{Spoiler}finally getting some Gummiberry juice and doing next to nothing. BTW, the GBJ sound effect is one of the catchiest.

Yeah, indeed. I will come to that but one of the very few fails of the 2017 Ducktales show: in the episode that referenced the Gummi Bears and Black Heron and Webby drank the "Gummi Berry Juice", they didn't add the sound effect. It would have been the perfect cap to the references in that episode. Episode 11: Little DipperB. Well, at this point I wondered when we were gonna go back to Lil' Gideon and him getting revenge on the Pines family. Aside from him, I liked the episode's take on the classic "person gets accidentally shrunk" with the crystals (and loved how the various wildlife got large and small during Dipper's discovery) with it also giving us some chance to see more of Dipper's and Mabel's sibling relationship. It really helps define these characters when, what could have been a straight-forward bickering siblings story, a reason for their behaviour is added, making them really feel more three-dimensional. Besides that, the episode had some good action scenes, superb humor and fun interactions between the characters. While the "shrunken person" trope is not really anything new, this episode still was pretty good. -OK, what the heck's the deal with Lil Gideon's mom? She seems one screw away from being committed to a mental institution. But I guess that's par for the course when you have a child like Gideon. -Hmm, what could be hidden in the Mystery Shack that Gideon is so interested in? Questions among questions... -Boy will Stan hate himself when he finds out that he lost out on 10 million dollars.

Episode 12A: Bubble TroubleB+. I liked the design of the cliff dragons (almost forgot about this segment existing and thinking that the green dragon from earlier and the Chinese dragon from later were the only dragons we saw in Gummi Bears) and I liked the idea of the bubble-encased flames acting like a sort of bomb. Add to that a great character episode for Sunni and some fun moments and you have a good segment. -Why is it that baby dragons in animated shows mostly had such aggravating voices during that time? Spike from My Little Pony G1, Puff from that one Captain N episode and this one...all had voices that made you almost want to rip your ears out. -I wonder whether the maker of Cuphead got his idea for one of Grim Matchstick's attacks from this episode (an attack that I genuinely hate in that game). -Genuinely liked Gruffi's attitude in this segment, showing the right amount of strictness while also showing a bit of kindness. The strictness is kind of understandable since both of the incidents in the first few minutes could have led to their secrets being compromised. -Liked the pebble shooter that both Cubbi and later Tummi used. Neat little gadget. Episode 12B: Gummi In A Strange LandA. A segment that I really liked in introducing a new creature with the Slumber Sprite, getting a look at the darker areas around Drekmore and some good interactions between Grammi and Cubbi which touch on the topic of role models make for an awesome segment. Not all good Gummi episodes have to be 22 minutes long after all. -The slumber sprite is voiced by Paul Winchell whom I mentioned in one of the earlier posts. Also apparently Grammi paid extra attention in the course "Slumber Sprite 101" given her extensive knowledge of them. Definitely get a lot of information about them in this episode which is kinda sad since we never get to meet other slumber sprites again. -Saber-toothed rabbits, bomb plants, mushrooms that become razor blades (sort of)...yikes, Drekmore is definitely not exactly the place you want to visit in your free time. -...OK, now here is something that I really wanted to know more of: what is this guy's story? What's his deal? Is he good, bad, neutral? Alas, we never find out. -Kinda sweet of Grammi to admit to the Slumber Sprite how she really thinks about Gruffi, although her stubbornness does not allow her to openly admit it. -Interesting to see that the slumber magic is most effective on intelligent creatures, putting them out apparently forever compared to dumb creatures like the ogres.

Episode 12: SummerweenA-. Where do I even begin to start with what I liked about this episode? I like the concept of Summerween (and it is quite ingenious to use melons as "jack-o'-melons" of sorts), the Summerween Trickster is a fitting scary creature (and I really like the effects they use that would probably get censured if it were about a real monster getting killed) and the revelation of what he is is quite interesting (and also a bit heartwarming in how he perishes in the end), the episode features another Dipper-Mabel moment that is actually touching in regards to their sibling relationship (making me really care about them as siblings) and there were some funny jokes in this one ("I'M TWAUMATISED!", Dipper and Mabel using twin cuteness to get all the candy, the ideas for Candy's and Grenda's costumes, the Pine family visiting the Summerween store, the credits gag with Mabel actually doing macro images using Waddles etc.). The only thing leading to that minus were Stan's B-plot being a bit pointless as well as Soos having a truly Patrick Star moment near the end that annoyed me a bit. Otherwise, a banger of an episode. -Um, huh, I guess their parents were really open-minded regarding Halloween ideas: -The Summerween Trickster is voiced by Jeff Bennett, a VA who's been long in the business with some of his roles being none other than the Johnny Bravo and also voicing Brooklyn in "Gargoyles" and Kowalski in "The Penguins Of Madagascar" TV show. -"Not S+P Approved"? Does Gravity Falls have a Standards & Practices board for parties that I don't know of? -Wondering what Pacifica and her cohorts were up to that night...perhaps they are too grown-up to go on something childish like Summerween trick-or-treating....seriously, while they weren't needed for this episode, it is odd that we didn't see them around in this episode.

Episode 13: Light Makes RightA. And so Season 1 of the Gummi Bears ends with a banger of an episode worthy of being a season finale. High stakes, plenty of action as well as some more world-building by giving us the information that there are still other gummi bears existing in this world make for a terrific episode that is only dampened by something behind the scenes (more on that below). Just a marvelous cap to a wonderful first season for this show. -A lot of backstory is shown in this episode, not only the flight of the Ancient Gummis in the beginning of the episode which is already an interesting way of opening the episode...but we also learn quite a bit about Duke Igthorn with him having been a knight at King Gregor's court before getting banished for obvious reasons. Until this point, we didn't know much about him but with this aspect of his character revealed, his goal of becoming king of Dunwyn suddenly became a bit more personal. Neat touch also that his former residence in Dunwyn has now been declared "Condemned" by King Gregor. -Love the design of the Gummiscope and the intricate machinery although I question the idea of building something that can also be used as a super weapon (in that regard, I loved the reference to the series opener when Igthorn dismissed the idea of a catapult) via a burning lense. -OK, these bears don't have much patience. They send a message, wait for about 5-10 seconds and then immediately declare that nobody will reply from that certain Gummi kingdom. At least give them some time to react, they probably don't have someone posted at their gummiscope due to not having any message received since centuries ago. So impatient, jeeze. -While we have seen main characters getting injured before in this show, Princess Calla being wounded by the gummiscope attack and the scene with King Gregor at her bedside really felt pretty serious for a Disney show. Another thing that I really liked about this episode. -As mentioned above and before by James Fabiano and myself, it is also a bittersweet episode as it was the last time Gruffi, Toadie and Sir Tuxford were voiced by Bill Scott who passed away in November of 1985, necessitating replacement for these characters in the upcoming season. And you won't have to wait since I will move along with the usual speed.

It's probably a reference to the legend of the Archimedes Mirror Weapon, which most likely never actually happened. Unfortunately we didn't have the Mythbusters yet in the 1980's to prove this.

Ah interesting. Thank you for the trivia, BlackoutCreature . Episode 13: Boss Mabel
C. Yeah, after having mostly very good to good episodes so far, this episode is the first one where I can only think of it as decent. I guess my main problem with it is that this time it doesn't really have any mystery or mystifying thing in it (except for the Gremloblin but that was not the major focus of the episode) and mostly features a plot that could have been in any other show as well. It is fun to watch Mabel trying to be all boss like and seeing how overwhelming it is (and when she does become boss-like at the end, this is probably the closest Mabel Pines will ever get to evoking Louise Belcher for me. Also I like how they are on the verge of doing the "What have I become?" trope that these types of episodes are famous for but turning it around) and the B-Plot with Stan being a really self-centered game show contestant was also chuckleworthy but overall, yeah, not exactly an episode I would use to introduce someone to Gravity Falls. -Now why couldn't we have gotten a whole episode with the Gremloblin instead? A beast half-gremlin, half-goblin that, when you look into its eyes, shows you its worst fears? I cannot imagine it being that hard to do a whole episode based on that premise. Loved the biggest fear of the Gremloblin, too. -Soos's Questiony costume...yeah, I am glad that he eventually found that idea to be pretty uncomfortable himself. -Neat that Stan actually went through at least 30 takes for his apology dance to Mabel...another indication that he cares about his niece and nephew. -Mabel only needed a tennis racket in the above pic and her Jim Cornette cosplay would have been perfect.
