It was the year that the first Brand Extension came to an end.

Wow, that might be the only picture I've seen where Punk doesn't have absolutely horrendous facial hair. I think it might be why HHH didn't like him. HHH for a time was the king of terrible facial hair and then along came CM Punk saying 'hold my pepsi' and outdid him in horrendous fashion.

Don’t forget Michael Cole winning a match at Wrestlemania.
He is also still undefeated at Wrestlemania.

And midway between all of this, John Cena announces that Osama bin Laden has been compromised to a permanent end. That had to be a weird way for some people to find out about that. That’s how my wife, best friend, his girl and I found out. We were at the PPV to see my boy Captain Charisma get strapped up and left the show to a massive chant of USA.

I remember cringing at that kick-line bit with the women on a Raw episode from June of that year. Yes, I know it was supposed to be tribute to the Tony Awards, but when the face women started kicking in that line, I turned away from the TV at that moment.

The last time I cared about WWE. Punk and the pipebomb and winning the belt was the most excited I had been since the Attitude Era about wrestling (apart from the one day of Nexus before Bryan was fired which ruined that for me). When it became about HHH and Diesel I realised it was still never going to be for me and haven't watched Raw since.

I've noticed that I hear a lot of people say they tuned back in because of the Pipebomb, but the numbers after Money in the Bank suggest that it didn't help business for very long...and the ones who say that also seem very conversant in other parts of the wrestling world, so I really wonder if it reignited the passion for wrestling in people more willing to look for other promotions.

Well for me, my "tuning back in" was in 2007 so I was already watching again for years by that point, including staying up late on Monday nights to watch live on many occasions when I could and every PPV. But was getting tired of waiting for something interesting to finally happen, which it seemed to be with Nexus and Punk but both were nearly immediately neutered in my eyes. After that I was like "ok we can never have nice things with WWE, something's always going to ruin it". With TNA also having lost their magic by then, most of my wrestling content for the next several years was just watching old school stuff and from this forum. It wasn't until NWA Powerrr I finally felt like I had something modern to watch and enjoy again, and then getting into AEW.

We started with Diesel in the Royal Rumble. Punk joins Nexus. The Corre is formed as revenge. Alberto wins the Rumble when the crowd wanted Santino. The Rock returns. 2 21 11 teases. Rock vs. Cena is booked. Edge retires. Bret Hart wrestles on a giveaway Raw as his final match. Orton vs. Christian..... Then we get the Summer of Punk. Triple H vs. Kevin Nash. Punk gets buried. Then we in the end with this photo: ![](https://www.wrestlezone.com/assets/uploads/2021/12/matt-cardona-cody-rhodes-wwe-11.jpeg) And midway between all of this, John Cena announces that Osama bin Laden has been compromised to a permanent end. How about the Rock apparently finding out before the public and f***ing teasing it on his Twitter??? Bizarro stuff
