The women's Joker is either Athena or a Joshi. Itoh would get a big time pop. I think if it's Athena, Baker is making it past round 1 though Joker to me is either Claudio or Gargano if they're beating Joe. If Joe's advancing? Maybe Harry Smith. There's a very real chance that if it's Gargano, we get a Gargano vs Cole final outta f***ing nowhere at the PPV... I was thinking the finals would be Joe vs. Cole as I assume they don’t want Joe missing the PPV, but Gargano vs. Cole would be great. The other thought is if Omega was fudging his return timeline a bit and is back as the Joker, taking on Cole in the finals.

Joe could realistically still face Lethal at the PPV for the TV Title if they need something.

I think if it's Athena, Baker is making it past round 1 though I think the opposite - Toni Storm's already gotten a pin on Baker (not a win, a pin, very pointedly), so unless the endgame of this tourney is to give Ruby a marquee win over Britt, it seems like a good moment for someone to start off with a big win on Baker. And it's hard to name someone better than Athena - she'd be arriving as the first NXT women's champion that AEW has managed to sign. Given the context that Toni Storm is the first woman in AEW to have won any gold whatsoever in WWE, Athena would be kind of a deceptively big signing.

That was a typo on my part, actually, I actually agree with you, I meant to say if Athena is the Joker, Baker's gonna be a round one upset. If it's someone like Itoh, Baker's winning probably.

Good news is that Dynamite wont face Warriors vs Mavericks(it will air at 11pm east time) the bad news is that their competition will be Survivor Season Finale.

Their rating still might go up though, especially on the lead-in which got absolutely sapped from Basketball. (Usually 1.2 or 1.1 down to less than 900K)

The thing I have my eye on when predicting the Owen is that the men's tournament screams "something for Adam Cole to do at the PPV since he is a big star and isn't in a feud right now." Related to that, Cole and Baker tend to have parallel accomplishments and statistics in AEW. Most notably, they both had Lights Out matches where they lost to their rival, but challenged for the world title at the next PPV anyway since they didn't take a mark in the L column. Therefore, if Cole is in the finals, Baker is going to be there. There's even a second parallel in that who they wrestle in the final will have likely gone through an ally first (O'Reilly in the men's, Hayter in the women's). Plus if nothing else, the women's tournament also screams "something for Britt Baker to do at the PPV since she is a big star and isn't in a feud right now."

I do not wanna be on this forum and watch it burn to the ground if Baker beats Toni Storm lol. I really feel like even if there's interference (Which people here hate with Baker anyway) it's just gonna mean that Rant thread inflates about five pages at least... Like I get the logic, it makes sense to me, but I really think Baker needs to sit this one out for Toni and the other half of the finals. If it's interference I'll understand more, but Baker really needs to have another loss... it'd probably come AT the PPV if she makes the final, sure, but there is an outlier that if she loses round 1, she gets a Buy-In match and is really pissed about it because now she's not even ON the PPV and in her eyes that's not good enough. I guess we'll see, it's all gonna matter on who the Joker's are, I just know a lot of people here are down hard on Baker, not as much as the whole Sammy/Scorpio/ATT storyline but... pretty down lol

If I was booking Britt, and basing it off her promos and personality recently, I would 100% have her lose to whoever the joker is. A crisis of faith angle could do wonders to rehab her. We’ve all known she’s a lot of bluster normally but she gets her wins via Rebel and Jamie, so an “upset” in the opening round leading to Britt doubting herself which then leads to the moment…to the genesis…of Baker.

Agreed. It's even a good angle if AEW is bringing in as many of the NXT crowd as they might - Baker's gotten pinned by Storm in a tag match; so, follow that up with a loss to Athena in singles, getting left off the PPV and getting to whine about it, and then a tag loss to a reunited Team Kick? She's instantly in a way more compelling place than she's been for the last half a year, with four rivals who have all been legitimized by her while only taking one singles loss.

Britt lashes out at Hayter, Rebel is split down the middle about who she supports, you can lead all of that towards a big show like Arthur Ashe or something.

I thought this is where we were headed after the world title loss with Britt...but she just went right back on her bullshit (kayfabe wise!). I'm kind of sick of the 'I was screwed!' heel excuse trope in wrestling but her losing to an opponent she had no knowledge of would work well in this case IF they go down the route you've described.

Athena or Maki Itoh I assume, it's all dependent on if Baker loses or not. If it's Athena I don't think Baker's winning.

The "Road to" video last night reminded me that tonight's show is in Houston.
...it's got to be Athena for that hometown pop, right?
