Remembered the other day about a guy I grew up with. Parley Beckner was his name. Dude was 2 grades above me in elementary school. Then he failted 5 grade 3 times.
Well back then in MS you could get your license at 15. Parley was in 6th grade turned 15 and went and asked the principal where he could park.
Then out of nowhere we all hear that Parley is being sent up to Jr High. Word for a long time was it was cause Parley was too old for elementary school. That was part of it. The other part was Parley got busted masterbating 3 times in the bathroom at school.
Years later I am in 9th grade and shocker Parley has been held back 2 more times and is in 9th grade with me.
By the time we hit high school Parley was 21. He dropped out not long into 10th grade.
But cause of all the issues he caused the rules for the local schools were changed. You could only be held back 2 times at each school level,IE Kindergarten thru 6th grade is a school level. So if say you failed 1st grade ,got held back. Then failed 3rd grade,no matter how bad your grades were after that they would pass you until you hit 7th grade.
Had another buddy that was a few years younger than us. He got held back 2 times in elementary school,2 times in jr high, then 2 times in high school. When he graduated he was in his mid 20s.

I graduated high school with a girl who I swear was a junior, or senior, when I got there as a freshman. My cousin that's four years older than me was in my graduating class

And because I had to see what a Parley Beckner looks like based on the name alone, turns out he (unsurprisingly given his tendencies toward self pleasure) is a registered sex offender in Mississippi per Google.

I skipped 1st grade along with two others in my class. All three of us ended up getting held back in 5th grade because someone decided we shouldn't move on to middle school ahead of our peers. Am I right in assuming the reason you skipped 1st grade was because your reading level, or maybe just general education level, was ahead of your peers at that time? If so, what did you do your second time through 5th grade? Just sleep the entire year? Yes, it was because of my reading level. And I was absolutely on cruise control the second time through 5th grade.

Getting left back on high school though is more common and it’s all credit based. You can be in 10th grade but still be taking 9th grade courses that you flunked.

I’m sure I went to high school with a guy who was pushing 20 and he was still there years after I left. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was still there 20 years later. He didn’t come across as particularly stupid and wasn’t in the special classes, I have no idea what his deal was.

I have failed classes before and then retook them. I retook some for summer school, as well as retook a class for an extended day class. I also retook a class during my junior year (grade 11) that I failed in my freshman year (grade 9). But I have never been held back a full grade.

There were two seniors when I was a freshman who got held back. They were both in my freshman level shop class. One of them wasn't stupid, just lazy. The other was both lazy and, I'll put it this way, how he managed to get through that class with all ten fingers is amazing.

Grade 7 was the best 3 years of my life. My dad very openly jokes about taking Grade 9 junior and Grade 9 senior before eventually dropping out. He did get a GED years later, but trade schools in the 70’s were pretty forgiving about no diploma if you can prove you’re capable of the necessary basic skills But yeah, when I was in school, I knew a few kids who got held back in school. Graduated with a few who were supposed to graduate a year or two before, and I had a small grad class of roughly 40

There was a dude in my freshman English class who was turning 18 as a freshman or sophomore because he had been held back so much.
