I remember this was a VERY hot rumor at the time. It was all over the place and they were actually leaning towards this direction until the last minute change.
How would this have changed the title scene?
Maybe Swagger cashes in on Bret Hart the next night and becomes the new WWE Champion?

I remember hearing the tag match rumor but not the Bret winning the title rumor.

Bret Hart raising the spinner WWE Championship belt at the end of WrestleMania after tapping out Vince McMahon?
lol sounds like a Vince idea
The ONLY way this would've been cool is if Bret Hart reintroduced the winged eagle title and got cashed in on by Jack Swagger immediately.

Plus by beating Bret and not Jericho, we don't have SRS Swagger. We have silly, flying American Eagle. Also, this wraps up the Bret vs. USA angle as an american finally comes out on top! Continuity from 1997, the Patriot even makes a cameo to thank Swagger.

A wink and a nod to the closure of the Bret and HBK saga with him doing Bret a good one to end the show. They both end the show doing crotch chops.

And how it involved every sing member of the Hart family who was on any sort of ok terms with Vince. As someone who was at that WM it dragged on. Also Shawn/UT should of closed the show

I looked it up and was astounded to find it ran for 11:09, because it genuinely feels like Bret just whaled away on Vince for about 20 minutes.

Even still, some of them bitched about wanting more spots, and Bret had to chastise them and tell them they were making it difficult for Nattie, and they pissed and moaned about that, too, as if she wouldn't have been indirectly punished if Vince was pissed off at Bruce Hart and co.

In another universe, 4AM after WrestleMania 26, Vince McMahon calls Bret Hart.
"Bret. I need you to drop the WWE Championship to Shawn on RAW tomorrow."
"Shawn retired, yesterday."
"Right. Right... but if he didn't, you'd do it, right?"
"Vince, it's 4AM..."
"That's not a yes, dammit."

I can imagine this being pitched by Bruce Hart, but with Bruce playing Bret. And Bruce.

Something I've always hated about the 'lesser known' Hart's is that they are complete marks for themselves and would try and try and milk the occasional bit of screen time and push for all this shit to give them the bigger spotlight. I mean, same could be said for Bret, but that was warranted. f***in' Bruce Hart? Get outta here with that shit.

Wrestling is full of people who are marks for themselves, but I genuinely can't think of anybody who I would consider a bigger mark for themselves than Bruce Hart. Just based on his autobiography the guy has always thought he was as big a star as Bret and Owen despite never really being more than a regional star at best.

He’s not a star here either.

Honestly I think it could've worked pretty decently if you did it right. Having Bret win the belt so he could then vacate it properly, kind of fully put the Montreal thing behind him by getting to go out on his own terms, could be a pretty cool moment, and you could've done like a tournament or something afterward.

I've never any issue with feel good moments like this. Bret with the title after beating Vince for it would have been a moment - and the crowd would have lapped it up.
How they got the title off Bret wouldnt have mattered, the moment of Bret beating Vince and getting the title back after all that time is what would have mattered.
Wrestling is a scripted experience, the moments are what matter.
