They did that in late 94/early 95 with the tag titles. Smoking Guns had to drop them due to injury. They held a tournament. Kid and Holly won them at the Rumble and then immediately lost them the next night to Guns. Even being 12 at the time, I knew the whole thing was pointless then. The Gunns had never been champions when they beat Holly and Kid. Shawn Michaels and Diesel were the last champions before the tournament. The Gunns did vacate the titles in February 1996 due to Billy getting injured, then the Bodydonnas beat the Godwinns on the WrestleMania 12 pre-show to become the new champions. The Godwinns won the titles in May, then lost them just a week later to the Gunns. I had to look it up because my memory of this seemed clear. They were supposed to be in tournament, but the injury prevented that. Then they won the titles the next day after Kid and Holly won them.

I heard it mentioned on SD last night that the tag Champs will be appearing/representing on all three brands. That was almost certainly a mistake on commentary's part, as the writeups all over WWE.com still indicate its RAW/SD only.

Pat McAfee: "You also gotta remember , the Women's Tag Team Titles are defended on EVERY brand that the WWE has." He emphasized the word "EVERY". I could be wrong.

They go back and forth acknowledging that NXT exists on the main shows and is a valid "brand," so even though Pat said every, I took it to mean just Raw and Smackdown until they specifically say NXT.

I guess this solves the problem of the tournament finals interfering with the final build to CatC.
So, we'll have the second chance match this Friday on Smackdown; the final semifinal match on next week's Smackdown; and then the finals take place after CatC.

The Fatal 4-Way will be between the four eliminated teams from the first round, and the winner will have the semi-final match against Rodriguez/Aliyah later in the night. Winners of that fight Sky/Kai for the gold on the next RAW.

Wait, so the finals is on Raw? If I am following correctly? Not at Clash?

Wait, so the finals is on Raw? If I am following correctly? Not at Clash? Yeah. Kinda think the writing was on the wall there once Sky/Kai and Asuka/Bliss were put on the same side of the tournament bracket and then booked for a separate six-woman tag at Clash.

I'm not sure why we are not calling Dakota and IYO by the name "Dakota Sky." I am obviously biased however.

You know, the fact that the Gunns did that not once, but twice really hurt them to the fans and ultimately made people not give a flying f*** when they broke up later that year.

I don't get why you book a final featuring a team that has a person that really can't go to the point where they had her partner do her own heat and comeback segment in the semi finals. Surely there were better options for this tournament than Aliyah.

She completely crashed and burned.

So if Sasha/Naomi are returning there's a good chance it'll either be after the tournament final on Monday, at Clash at the Castle if they want to save it for a massive stadium crowd or the Raw/Smackdown (Smackdown needs them a lot more) after the PPV when they have a clean slate to start new stories.
It'll probably be much harder to keep their return under wraps if it's CATC though. They managed to do it with Gargano recently but that was a random Raw in NA and he apparently flew in on the company jet so no one really saw him. It'll be difficult for Sasha and Naomi to travel to the UK without being spotted at some point and the news being leaked.

According to SRS she's not "medically cleared" anyways although they didn't specify why she isn't when he asked.
