Didn't see a thread for it and searched under a few terms, so if this doesn't need to be merged let me wish a very happy Top Gun Day to those who celebrate (which should be all of us).
The new Top Gun movie is absolutely excellent. Nostalgia done absolutely right, amazing music, jaw-dropping flying footage just everything you could possibly want in a summer blockbuster. You can really tell a lot of thought went into this one to not just make it a quick cash-in. The explanations for everything since the last Top Gun make complete sense so there's no logic gaps, and the tension and levity are perfectly mixed.
The closest thing I can think to compare it too is what a breath of fresh air 'Rocky Balboa' was in 2006. Even if you felt just so-so about the first one, this new one is everything great about feel-good summer blockbusters in one movie.
Here's my full review:
Anyone else seen this or plan to see it yet?

I've never seen the first one (I know I know) but it does look pretty cool and the rave reviews have me wanting to check it out for sure.

Why is May 27th Top Gun day? Is there some relevance to the date to the films?

If I've never seen the original in full, am I going to get anything out of this?

I am so happy this movie is finally out. I will never see this movie.
Since February 2020, everytime I've been to the cinema I have had to sit through that trailer. So I'd say I've seen it between 55-60 times by now. I can recite the dialogue verbatim at this stage. About 4 months ago they released a slightly updated version of the original trailer which I could identify because "Huh, they've put in updated B-roll of jets flying".
I never want to hear "They're called orders, Maverick" again. I never want to see Miles Teller's moustache again. I hear the movies supposed to be really good and I hope anyone that's hyped for it enjoys it, but I never want to experience anything to do with this movie ever again.

What other old Tom Cruise movies can he revisit?

It's been a happy surprise to hear how good and see how well this one is doing.
I'll definitely get it on my to-do list.

I've been begging the family to come see this with me I’m trying to convince my Dad to come see this in theatres with me. He’s the one who got me hooked on the original (if you’re gonna buy surround sound, you should start with Top Gun was his theory in the early 90’s). Last movie I saw with pops in theatres was The Dark Knight, it would be magical if we went to this. EDIT: Top Gun soundtrack was the first CD I remember my parents owning (I have that copy of it now) and we didn’t even have a CD player, we had to listen to it on dads work computer

If I've never seen the original in full, am I going to get anything out of this? It’s a good movie if you haven’t seen the original but a great one if you have.

Cruise is really the last movie star I'll go out and see anything for. Absolutely loved it. Can't wait for the next Mission Impossible also. If I've never seen the original in full, am I going to get anything out of this? Yes. They do a good job of refreshing plot points. It's a simple movie done really, really well. The set pieces are incredible and worth seeing on the big screen. I was really happy to see Val Kimer in it too.

As a lifelong huge fan of the original I don’t know what the f*** everyone is smoking when giving this rave reviews.
Its awful. Generic Hollywood blockbuster awful. Cheesy jokes awful. Total lack of character development awful.
The aviation scenes were great, but the rest of the film is nothing more than a masturbatory display of Tom Cruise’s ego. Seriously, are you supposed to give two f***s about anyone else in this film? And his PG relationship with Jennifer Connelly was the type of shit you cringe at when watching a live action Disney movie.
And don’t even let me get started on the absurd plot holes. The original film was rooted in realism, this film just says f*** it and has Maverick do whatever bullshit Maverick is gonna do. Newsflash, you can’t just fly a plane in the Navy whenever you damn well please.
I don’t care how much money this film makes, its hot garbage to me
