5.7 million previews. Very large opening for a slasher, bigger than any of its predecessors (and last week's Creed 3 if you're keeping score). The key is how front-loaded it will be.
If this is becoming the official thread, I'll just give thoughts here - the movie was great. Neve being gone didn't really impact my enjoyment of it too much, if I'm honest. If you liked 5, I suspect you'll love 6. Just my two cents.

I thought that the movie not only didn’t miss Sidney…but made a strong case that it’s time to put the franchise firmly in the hands of the new characters and leave the past behind. Kirby and Gale were good…I’m not saying they weren’t…but it’s time to go all in with what the new creative team is building without being beholden to the past.

I think this is the movie where it all kinda started to click for the new group. I thought that Melissa Barrera did a great job as Sam this time around, I know some folks weren't as high on her in the 5th one.

I didn’t have a problem with her in 2022…but I understood the people who did. What a difference a year makes because she was unquestionably excellent in this one. All the “core four” were. Mason Gooding stood out to me as doing a really good job walking the line between showing a sensitive side of being afraid of being attacked again…but needing to protect the people he cares about. And it was great that Jenna Ortega got to do a ton more this movie not confined to hospital beds and wheelchairs.

This was a solid entry to the series not my fav though as I have plenty of issues with it most notably the reveal which I thought albeit clever was undercooked especially after that great opening which could have leant itself IMO to a way stronger 3rd act reveal.
But what this got right is that this felt like the directors vision of what they want to do with the series unlike Scream 5 which was them trying to honor Wes by doing scream the way he likely would have done it and by setting it in new york completely makes it their own.
I am not gonna be saying this series should be done with Syd but this movie's story was written in such a way that it did not need her and it works well.

When more people have seen it I do want to discuss that opening scene. I thought it was brilliant…and ultimately a mistake if they weren’t going to go all the way with it. I had a huge smile on my face thinking we were going to be seeing something done wildly differently than every other entry…and then they ran away from it. Still really liked the movie but if you’re going to use a wild swing like that…it’s too good not to be the movie imo.

I feel like a lot of people are sort of missing the point with this. Like, screw if the character had their story or whatever other things you can do, Scream 5 made an absolute killing in the box office and they can’t give a pay rise to one of the people responsible for that, especially since they wanted her to come back? It’s bullshit, plain and simple. *sees some post* *sighs* *taps sign*

Jenna Ortega's rise has been pretty meteoric the past 2 or so years. I mean, good for her, she's delivering, it's just enough to make me wonder when the hell she has time to sleep, it seems like she's got a new project every 5 minutes.

In more ways than one I guess from your perspective.

In more ways than one I guess from your perspective. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW} I thought for a moment…specifically when he crosses paths with Tara and you know he already knows them….that we’d keep his partner a secret and watch as this guy infiltrates the group and sets things up…not being able to trust anyone isn’t in cahoots with him. Like…see the ghostface from the other side…but still have a mystery. Maybe even kill this guy off halfway through but they know he has an accomplice and everyone is a heightened suspect because this was our friend or your roommate or this person’s boyfriend or cousin or something.
Revealing the identity of one killer early but knowing there are two is something I thought about 25 years ago and thought I was getting it lol.

That sounds pretty fresh honestly. Wouldn't have minded some story beats like that.
{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW} I've thought about them doing an "opposing killer" scenario in Screams past - though with how these guys betray each other maybe you can say I got it twice before now, 3x if you're an Angelina truther!

Definitely gonna exceed Scream 2022's total domestic take this weekend (81.64 million). Performing at the BO like a normal slasher - front-loaded with large second week drop - but staying strong. It's going to make it to 100mil barring digital release that takes the wind out of its sails (lookin' at you, M3GAN).

The fact that it made more than the last one is a really good sign for the health of the franchise. There was a very good chance the last one hit as big because of the nostalgia and being 25 years later and legacy characters. Combine that with reaching a new generation of viewers and it isn’t that big of a surprise that it hit. But there were decent odds the sequel wouldn’t do as well because a lot of those reasons were lessened this time. They didn’t just hold their audience…they grew it.
Now…sequels will often do better than the first one because word of mouth carries it past its theatrical run and people discover it at home…but Scream (2022) wasn’t technically an original. Seeing a horror franchise rise from the 4th to the 5th to the 6th installment is pretty impressive. They had a legit reboot of the franchise in 2022 that worked…and a new audience that’s in.

Also of note (I saw this somewhere else…so forgive me if it was here lol) when Scream VII inevitably comes out…Scream will be the first billion dollars (worldwide) slasher franchise in history.
Other horror franchises have made a billion dollars worldwide. But not slashers. The Conjuring, It, Alien, Resident Evil and Saw have all done it…but none are slasher franchises.
Halloween will inevitably cross a billion at some point as well. Probably, I’m guessing, in 2028 when whatever they do for the 50th anniversary happens. You can’t tell me we aren’t getting a new movie in 2028. I don’t know what it looks like…but I know it’s coming.
….
Also…look at It getting there in two movies! Damn.
