Mutch going from a broken down joke in WcW 1999/00 to being the best wrestler in the world in 2001 is one of the greatest wrestler comebacks in history. Obviously he's gone on too long, but he's still a legend.

Obviously he's gone on too long, but he's still a legend. His time in All Japan is something that they should write books about. Nobody expected him to be as good as he was when he changed his style. His chairmanship also almost single handidly helped All Japan come back from the brink of oblivion after the NOAH exodus. He and Tenryu kept them afloat.

Any chance he’ll be in a tag match at Forbidden Door with Sting on the other side?

Any chance he’ll be in a tag match at Forbidden Door with Sting on the other side? Nope, he hasn't been on good terms with NJPW for a while

But why now? Why not 20 years ago?
But seriously good for him. At least he has fairly good health given his longevity.
As @flaminghalo pointed out he had an amazing career comeback. Over the last 10 years or so he’s declined considerably, but it’s a Ric Flair case where even broken down, he can still put on a better match than most. Fortunately, he’s nowhere near as bad as Flair in hanging around WAAAY too long.

I hope these are five solid matches that build future stars.
Just kidding - moonsaults for everyone.

A bit of a legendary ego sometimes, but nonetheless, one of THE names in Japanese wrestling for a reason, over numerous eras. It's difficult to overstate his importance, so it's going to be kind of surreal, going into an era of puro without him in it.

More so then any other puro star, he's arguably the biggest Japanese name ever. He's a legend in both American & Japanese promotions.

I said it before, but AEW needs to get Great Muta at least once vs Sting. Either a quick match between the two with all the bells and whistles and grand entrances, or that and you add in Darby and someone Kenji would want and let them do the heavy lifting until Mutoh and Sting have one final battle
Idk if it'll happen, but man I really want to see it, and it'd be a huge deal if they could swing it, there's a lot of history there.

Mutoh mentioned that part of the issue with having a retirement show was because a lot of guys he wanted there are overseas and COVID is still a fluid situation. My mind immediately went to Sting. Maybe he could bring the show to Sting.

He rightfully gets praised for his work with Sting but check out any time he fought Shinya Hashimoto. Those two would just beat the shinola out of each other.

Sting vs Muta in an AEW PPV would sell itself.
Flip the script a bit, and instead of Darby telling Sting that he's got to handle this one on his own, have Sting be the one to tell Darby that this is his fight.

Would be cool to see a montage of Sting training Darby for it somehow. Like show him getting Darby in a real dark, focused place. Did anything of importance with Sting/Muta happen in NJPW that they could license footage for?
