It was the right time and waiting any longer wouldn't have done him any favors. But the reign itself was a struggle at times. The company also just struggled as a whole with making new heels for their two new top babyfaces and Cena struggled more than Batista with that.

He was so over and selling so much merch he could realistically have won the title anytime from summer 2003 onwards. He was getting cheered over Angle and Taker as a heel. Then once he turned face listen to the pops he was getting on shows like Survivor Series 03/RR 04/WM XX/RR 05. Then the month before he won the title he faced Angle in his hometown of Pittsburgh at No Way Out and was cheered over him. That's how over he was. He was more than ready.
If anything they showed surprising restraint in building him up for an extra year with the US title before putting the main title on him in 2005. I think it was the smart thing to do though.

nope not in the slightest Cena had been in wwf from june 2002 to april 2005 when he won the title. and when they turned him heel in late 2002 and he did the rapping gimmick then his match with Lesnar at backlash 2002 he started gaining pretty good momentum and had three feuds with undertaker and Eddie (loved the parking lot brawl) and Kurt Angle. by the time they turned him face around survior series 2003 he was getting cheered as he was considered an anti hero (kinda like austin 1997). in 2004 he spent it in the US title photo feuding with booker big show Dupree and others and was getting one of the best reactions. He was the perfect person to end JBLS reign of terror. I noticed he started getting boos during his 05 feud with angle. but it got really noticeable by 2006.

I think the biggest issue with Cena is more that he got super over under one gimmick and then once he actually hit the main event scene they immediately completely dismantled it and made him super milquetoast.
