Bit of a side rant for me as a literature and film buff. But seriously-the books are all public domain, streaming services have a constant demand for new content, and the big studios are always in the hunt for a profitable franchise, so why hasn’t anyone tried adapting the Oz series in true to story fashion? The idea occurred to me in particular because seemingly no one in the wider audience even realizes there are more books beyond The Wizard, let alone that the Wicked Witch of the West is drastically different in the story than the iconic movie depicted her, or even that the Nome King is the true villain of Oz. I can only assume that the legacy of the classic musical looms so large they no studio considers it worth trying to create a separate legacy. But it still seems a waste.

I mean, there have been attempts over the years to do stuff with Oz outside of the classic movie. Return to Oz in the 80s, that Tin Man mini-series Sci-Fi did, 2013's Oz the Great and Powerful.
I do think the looming presence of the old movie though is why none of them click like that did. That and some of the Oz stuff gets a bit weird for general audiences I'm sure.

There is some really REALLY weird shit in Oz. A lot of it is more appropriate for a South Park episode than a serious series.
I also feel like a lot of people on the 'net would be like "where the hell is the yellow brick road/dancing and singing munchkins?" After the first episode

It is like TMNT '87, in that this is most people's first exposure to the franchise. Anything that betrays the more popular lighter and softer version will probably be seen as betraying the franchise.

Because the 1939 movie is already established and well-loved by most people. Most of the general public does not care about seeing adaptations of the other Oz books or even a ture-to-the-book adaptation of The WonderfuL Wizard of Oz.

They did adapt Oz into an episodic series; it even had Emerald City and a wizard with a crazy hat named Adebesi.

A couple years ago there was that show on NBC, Emerald City, with Vincent D'Onofrio as the Wizard. It wasn't very well received and canceled after one season, which actually seems weird since I swear it was originally advertised as a mini-series. It was basically a mash-up of the Oz mythos with Game of Thrones.

I've always been bothered by that, too. It's not that there haven't been numerous attempts to make prequels, sequels, or reimaginings of The Wizard of Oz. Those are plentiful - from Wicked to Oz, the Great and Powerful. But they're always original content spinning off of the first book, since that's the one that had the famous musical adaptation, even though there are over a dozen public domain sequels to the original by the original author right there gathering dust. It's like the work is already done, and no one wants to take advantage of it.
It would be like if, in about 15 years, someone made a big budget musical remake of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and it became such a massive sensation that it completely defined the public's perception of Harry Potter from that point on. So much so that for the next 80+ years, any attempt at a new Potter project was either a sequel, prequel, or reimagining of the musical, and the original book series was completely forgotten.

See Little Orphan Annie. The comic strip ran for 86 years with Annie having many many fantastic adventures. But any time anyone attempts to adapt it, it's all orphans singing about hard knock life.

I remember in high school going to see a stage play of Ozma of Oz. It wasn’t until I was out of college that I discovered it was an actual story written by L. Frank Baum and not a fanfiction that was made up later on by someone else.

Kinda related, but the Wiz movie soundtrack is fire. I could never buy into Diana Ross in the Dorothy role though. The Wiz Live broadcasts get her right. Other than that it’s stupid fun and MJ throws in great vocals.

"Return to Oz" is a creepy film based on actual stories. So imagine what we'd get if others were adapted to film. I could do without an updated version of the Wheelers.

They did adapt Oz into an episodic series; it even had Emerald City and a wizard with a crazy hat named Adebesi. He had a duel with another wizard named Vern Schillinger to see who had a bigger wand

Because when they release something closer to the books, you get Return to Oz (which I loved but it bombed HARD).

All the male on male rape would probably make it unpalatable to a mass audience.
Emerald City is no joke!

Anything not based on the Judy Garland version of Oz would be bewildering to the audience.

Make a new version but make it sexier. Sexy Dorothy, sexy Tin-Woman, sexy Scarecrow, sexy Lioness. Sexy witches.
