Still excited for the show, but this sucks ass (Disney starting over is almost certainly to avoid having to pay the crew in full)

I'd agree that morally should pay any returning cast/crew their full rate, but they also didn't HAVE to bring the show back at all, so this does seem like a bit of sour grapes to me.

The problem is, Netflix and Disney and other companies have a history of playing games with this three season thing, so this isn't an isolated incident.

They're also different companies producing it. ABC Studios and Marvel Television (which, when it was its own production company, was part of Marvel Entertainment, which handles the comics end of things) with Netflix as a distributor. Born Again is being handled by Marvel Studios and distributed by Disney outright. Marvel Studios is entirely separate from the rest of Marvel, with Kevin Feige only answering to Disney CEO Chapek.
Different showrunners, too. It'd be the morally right thing to pay higher rates, but Born Again is essentially a new show rather than a season 4 of the Netflix show. It's not Disney's fault that Netflix cancelled the show and the other Marvel Netflix projects.

I don't think it's as clear cut as all that, with the show migrating from one platform to another after an interval of several years. Also, Netflix made the decision to cancel the show. By all accounts Disney were quite happy to let them continue making shows, so it seems somewhat petty to hold Disney accountable for a decision Netflix made. To further complicate matters, the two main production companies for the show – ABC Studios and Marvel Television – have since ceased to exist. A good chunk of the in-house production staff who worked for those companies would have been laid off. Disney should absolutely give any production staff still there who work on Born Again their full dues, though.

With that last line it sounds more and more like the Netflix shows are definitely being rendered officially non-canon, and that cast members and certain design choices are about the only things carrying over.

Probably not non-canon so much as not continuing the storylines and character arcs from the Netflix shows. And considering how much stuff happened in-universe between the end of the Netflix runs and this new show (like the Blip), it'd be weird if it WAS a S4.
Basically, this sounds like it will serve as a soft reboot of the character without invalidating his previous stories. It's also inevitable that it will have a different feel from the Netflix show with different creative staff in charge.

Yup…how many years have passed in universe time between Season 3 and the current MCU in canon? Just because it’s a new deal and not a continuation doesn’t mean the series wasn’t canon. It can be canon without acknowledging it storyline wise. Now if we get a new Hand or Elektra out of nowhere…

Matt is looking for Jessica Jones so apparently they are keeping some things from the Netflix era

With that last line it sounds more and more like the Netflix shows are definitely being rendered officially non-canon, and that cast members and certain design choices are about the only things carrying over. I’ve said it from the start, best thing Disney can do is pick and choose what they want to carry over from the Netflix shows and discard the rest so you aren’t tied to anything you don’t want to be. It would be a pain to make sure everything in the Defenders Universe matches up to everything in the MCU proper.

The Netflix shows killed off some characters that Feige might feel they could use, and takes others in directions that might be better walking back. I'm not entirely sure they'd want to keep Jessica in her weakened, immunocompromised state, for example.

This could be interesting but as awesome as Vincent D'Onofrio is as Kingpin I was done with that story. That said, I'll definitely give it a chance. I would love if it led to new life for other characters as well.
Iron First season 1 was a garbage fire but season 2 was far better and set up stuff from the Fraction/Brubaker run that would have been great. Also, I would love for Luke Cage to get a happy ending for once. Really though, I do hope soft reboot is the way they go and that they don't totally invalidate the netflix era because there was a lot of good in there.

Ritter is unavailable due to scheduling with Orphan Black: Echoes, so the word is Punisher will replace Jessica Jones.

I really hope they keep most of the casting in tact, even if they soft reboot events and story beats.
I want Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson back as well.
Élodie Yung as Elektra....I could take or leave.
Madame Gao is a must have for me. I don't know why, that actress just had crazy screen presence.

Elodie Yung has a show on Fox right now, so it could be similar to Mike Colter/Luke Cage. It just might not be possible.

It’s amazing Colter gets steady work in film & television despite having absolutely no acting ability, but hey good for him.
