I feel like MJF's going to pop up sooner or later and if so, MJF vs. Mox might be a hotter match than Danielson vs. Mox if MJF has the same level of buzz. If MJF and AEW are truly on the outs and Punk is not an option, then yeah, you kind of have to do Danielson vs. Mox. As an side, I thought I'd be able to come up with a few potential options but AEW's main event scene is kind of messed up right now. Losing Punk has taken away a LOT of first time matches they were probably relying on this year. Yeah, same, I looked through the roster and despite thinking Jericho and Mox sounds dreadful, I get why they’re doing it.

Hell, you could reasonably toss almost anyone into the main event with Mox and it would be hype *cough* Samoa Joe.
I wouldn't mind seeing them capitalize on Claudio's momentum. Create a little dissension within BCC. Have Claudio become a fighting champion leading into him and Mox butting heads over who is the better champ. Maybe have Yuta interject himself a bit. Have Regal fet sick of the squabbling, and tell his boys to settle it in the ring. Bingo, there's your main event.
Or Mox vs. Hangman. Any reason this match wouldn't happen?

Mox/Hangman or Mox/Danielson seems like a popular answer, so let me take a different swing:
With Malakei Black primed to get one up on Sting and Mox beating Brody King...could they do Black v. Mox?

Do a battle royal early in the show and have a shock winner, someone who can go but has been neglected. John Silver, Sonny Kiss, Lee Moriarty or even Griff Garrison and redo the Undertaker v Jeff Hardy match with Moxley retaining by the skin of his teeth.
If not that then have a four way to make room for wrestlers lower on the card to get a match earlier in the show. Moxley v Miro v OC v Jericho would be my choice.
Have a routine Moxley v Jericho match in the middle of the card, maybe with a stipulation (Jericho loses JAS split up?) and have the woman's title main event. I'd go with Rosa v Hikaru Shida in some sort of gimmick match (cage, ladder) and after the victorious champ is celebrating after a long match new music hits and Mercedes "The CEO" Banks-Varnado appears to state her claim to the division.

(Let's put the debate about how the rankings are decided to one side and just take them at face value)
That's not a particularly thrilling top 5 on the men's side if Punk isn't ready. I hope they're not positioning Jericho for it. I think Hangman is the most interesting option and Hangman vs. Mox would be something fresh. Hobbs would be a great PPV challenger for Wardlow, IMO.

AEW Interim World Champion - Jon Moxley vs Winner of Casino Battle Royal - Wild Card entrant Wyatt 6 Wyatt can only debut in Rochester, NY. The hometown of his good friend Brodie Lee. That's why he's only rumored to come in at the yearly Rochester show.

Meltzer’s answer when asked about this yesterday was interesting. He first mentions “MJF or Kenny omega”. However, minutes before he brought up The Bucks being positioned to tag with Kenny for the trios.
Then he muses about Okada. Which..that’s a whole thing in itself.
He doesn’t even bring up Hangman who, judging by the rankings, seems logical.
He dismisses BD cause of the loss to Garcia.
Then there’s the off chance Jericho beats Moxley, I guess. But Dave did state that whatever the plan is, he thinks there should be some sort of indication by Wednesday.

Malakai and Moxley have never interacted, so that match would be interesting.

The problem is outside of Punk, Danielson and maybe MJF I can't see anyone facing Moxley where the result would be in doubt.
I'd be happy with any of those 3 but if it does wind up MJF I'd really want to see him win as there's just no intriguing stories with Mox as champion for me and loads with MJF.

If you can't do Omega/MJF for some reason, I'd be open to Jericho winning Wednesday and then Moxley getting it back at All Out. They rarely ever do that especially with their big belts and it would basically tell you that you're going to get a title change on PPV.

I don't get people saying Tanahashi should've beat Moxley. The whole point of an interim champion is to fill in for a champ that is unable to defend their title. And I love Tanahashi but he's already committed to NJPW dates, including the G1. Unless he was able to make a whole bunch of appearances at AEW shows, you don't replace one absentee champion for another. It just makes no sense.

It is nuts this is still a mystery. The last time a major PPV match was this much of a mystery was—GASP I KNOW WHO MOXLEY'S FACING {Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}

It is nuts this is still a mystery. I was shocked to see this thread bumped up lol. The only original option I put out there still left is MJF...

Chicago means they can use The Forbidden Door if they choose the mystery opponent route, Jay White, Jacob Fatu or Josh Alexander wouldn't be greeted with a collective "Who?" of silence like they might get in less smarky markets.

I hope it's Hangman. He's the only one really that makes any sense and that people would accept short notice.
