Team Taz should probably be looked to in the future for a model of how to build and break up a tag team that looks like it's "two singles guys thrown together."
Ricky had been getting increasingly consistent face reactions, with the waters having been tested by having him score big victories to huge pops in his hometown of New Orleans and his pseudo-home state of Texas.
The Team Taz pairing had been on fire for the months leading to the breakup, with both members scoring big wins (Ricky's singles wins over Jungle Boy, Swerve, and Jay Lethal; Hobbs getting the first pin on Keith Lee in AEW). They'd just had two matches as a pair that had solidified demand for them as tag champs. They'd been together for over a year and a half, and yet had not actually done enough as a team to wear out their welcome. There was still more on the table.
And most importantly: the team had a coherent personality, helped by Taz as a manager. Not only that, but it was established that even though these were the bad guys, they were also buddies. Whether that was Taz inserting goofy stuff on commentary or just the way they'd interact with one another, Hobbs and Starks felt like friends, villainous friends. Hook hanging around helped with that, as well, since he did a lot to make the stable's vibe more casual when he was more involved with it.
And then Hobbs turns on Starks after Starks - the one who'd been getting increasingly positive reactions - did something very honorable, which itself was an echo of his friendship with Hobbs.
A+, good turn, good team run.

With the neck selling last week and then again this week, the post match respect and Babyface promo, I thought Ricky was about to take some time off...then Hobbs f***ing decapitated him. I damn near jumped out my chair. That was a career setting moment. It will tie those two together for their entire AEW careers and that is a great thing.

I guess calling Hobbs a Fancy Boy too many times is what finally set him off 🤔

Team Taz got over when they became a Rampage exclusive act at the beginning of 2022, and then the Swerve in our Glory feud did its job elevating both acts and never dragging despite being fairly long.

“Why? Cause dudes got a weird ass head. You ever actually looked at that thing? I mean really looked at it?? I dunno why I didn’t clobber him sooner, honestly.” "Quite understandable, have a good evening, sir."

I always expect partners to attack each other in wrestling but I genuinely didn't expect this one. The timing was perfect.

Because Starks would never wear the red stripped shirt and shorts

I’m excited for Ricky’s big face run, but I think Hobbs is gonna knock it out of the park as a monster heel. His facial expressions and that snarl are f***ing out of this world.

I was completely shocked by this. All involved did an excellent job of not telegraphing the turn despite it happening at the perfect point of Ricky's promo.
The pair of them are mega stars in the making, IMO, and if AEW play it right, Starks vs Hobbs could be one of those long-running career defining feuds.

Ricky Starks is absolutely gonna be a superstar, Hobbs could be one too but I’m not quite as sold on him yet but you can see flashes of brilliance

Said this a few weeks ago about the tag title three-way, but Hobbs is one of AEW's best real grown talents. Dude was just a local scene guy not really on anybody's radar, but he showed up and impressed so hard he quickly started getting more spots and appearances, then signed entirely. Since then he's consistently proven how damn good he is, his placement into Team Taz worked wonders, and he's very much proven how good he is while growing into that. A lot of AEW's dead obvious future starts like Starks or Swerve were already notable on the indies. Hobbs came out of nowhere and he's got a place up there with some pretty hefty names.

If done right, this can elevate both Starks and Hobbs to the upper card. Starks in particular is World Championship material imo.

Yeah I think both Starks and Hobbs are future stars. Starks is ready and has been ready for a main event push. Hobbs probably needs a bit more time but no question to me he can handle it based on his improvement in the past year.

I love the Irony in this ,is that it was literally Team Taz that brought Hobbs to the dark side.
Now he is the last one that is a heel.
I'm mad(at the character Hobbs) that he robed me of such beautiful friendship. f*** it worked so well that it leaves me mad remembering the moment.I'm a f***ing Mark

My stomach actually dropped at the attack, I did NOT see it coming. I can't remember the last turn/betrayal that got me like that. Think it might be the most out of nowhere turn since Jonathan Coachman.

I don’t wanna call that a perfect segment, but all of Hook, Starks and Hobbs came out of that as bigger stars than when it started.
Just a home run segment and a truly shocking turn.

This was a very sexy segment. Starks was sexy. Hobbs was sexy. Hook was sexy. Danhausen was sexyhausen. Tony was Shiavonesexy.
