Greetings, all. There have been threads on specific aspects of teams and uniforms. Now we have a thread for discussing uniforms as a whole! As an avid Uni Watch reader, I've been obsessed with uniforms for years. With the spate of recent news on NFL teams using a second color shell, plus a few NBA releases for next season, what better time to start a thread than now?

Don't limit it to just new releases. Any uniform-related discussion is welcome.

Here are my personal rankings of the new NFL alternate helmets

1. Cincinnati Bengals



This move has been anticipated since the release of the Bengals' black and white unis, and it is spectacular. I love the decision to wear the color rush uniforms with it, simply because the chest logo is smaller. I wouldn't mind if they changed that logo to black and white as well.

2. New York Giants



I may be a bit biased on this one, so be it. The Giants will be wearing throwbacks to the 80's and early 90's twice this season. Some people are thrown off by the helmet and jersey being different shades of blue, but it's accurate to the original. Added points for the news that they will be changing the end zones for the games based on Super Bowl XXI, and sideline staff will be wearing era-accurate attire. Here's hoping Brian Daboll is outfitted like Bill Parcells.



3. Atlanta Falcons



This is one I wouldn't mind seeing become their primary set. Just a great look. It would look just as good with the red jerseys, and be another great throwback.

4. New England Patriots



As a Giants fan this one pains me, but the Pat Patriot look is stellar.

5. Dallas Cowboys



Another one that pains me, but again it's a great look and throwback to the first few years of the Cowboys franchise. It's also been said that they will wear the white lids with their usual star logo for their color rush look. Trivia note: the last time the Giants wore white in Dallas, as they will on Thanksgiving, was in 1963, and with the Giants' away uniforms being nearly identical to their look back then, this game will look very similar.

6. Carolina Panthers



The Panthers will wear their slick new black lids when they go mono-black for a Thursday night game this season. I'm usually not a fan of teams wearing black unless it's in their color palette, so this works and will look awesome under the lights.

7. New Orleans Saints



The Saints have a history of wearing black helmets, at least for a few games, so there's history, and of course black is one of their main colors. So this works. Not a huge fan of the center striping, though.

8. Houston Texans



This will be paired with the red jersey. I guess it's okay. Better than the blue helmet with the red jersey, IMO.

9. Chicago Bears



Just not a fan of all the orange. It's too Bengals. The only thing keeping it off the bottom of the list is the black for black sake teams.

10. Arizona Cardinals



The Cardinals went with black helmets. I guess since they forced black into their color scheme a few seasons ago, this will go above the rest. They plan to wear them with both the color rush and black alternate sets.

11. New York Jets



Ugh. The Jets forced black into their scheme last season and it's abysmal. Why you don't do a Gang Green alternate is beyond me, but I guess they paid all this money for a redesign so might as well use it.

12. Philadelphia Eagles



The only saving grace is that these are only expected to stay for one season, then the Kelly Greens are coming back. Another team that forced black into their scheme and it just doesn't belong.

13. Washington Commanders



The Washington Football Team have always had a great color palette. The burgandy and yellow, with white added in. just stood out. I wish they hadn't gone with such a different design, but I get it. They're down here because they again forced black into their scheme.

I can't believe my brain didn't put together the idea of Cincy looking like white Bengal tigers. I dig that.

And yeah, I love the Giants bringing the 80s-90s retros back, and I wish they'd go back full time to their 80s-90s away jerseys ala Super Bowl XXV. It makes them look a bit too much like the Bills, perhaps, but when the Giants switched back to their really old school looks circa 2006 or whatever (solid blue jersey, white jersey with red numbers, occasional red jersey, lower case "ny" logo)...I don't know, I don't dislike the solid blue one, but most of their look has just been boring with those jerseys, and the 80s-90s look just feels like it has more going on for it, so I approve bringing it back, along with the italicized "GIANTS" logo on the helmet, the fun callback to the state of New Jersey not being keen on the Giants or Jets putting "NY" on their helmets so long as they were playing in our state.

And yeah, the Jets have made baffling jersey decisions the last couple of seasons. They finally have a front office that seems like it knows what it's doing, but their new green jersey is just kind of ugly and they're force feeding a black jersey set that just does nothing for me.

I'm gonna have to add a post here later doing a tier ranking of the MLB City Connect jerseys that've been released so far; I typically hate Nike as the main jersey distributor for a league, but they've done some very good work on those.

A friend and I went back and forth for a few days ranking the City Connects. I’m curious to see what you think.

Ok, I tried to rank them based on multiple criteria:
-Given that these are meant to be "City Connect" jerseys, how well do they, y'know...connect with their respective cities? As in, do they reflect the local culture, aesthetics, history, geography, climate, etc.?
-Put together with the uniform pants and caps, how do they look as complete uniforms when they're on the field?
-Do some of these clubs have designs that might've been more interesting that they clearly passed up on?
-Do they have any interesting aesthetic choices made, or small details that give them a little extra something to make them interesting?
-Were I a fan of any of these teams would I go out of my way to buy 'em? Related, but how would I rank the City Connect jersey against the team's normal uniforms?
-Even if I'm not a fan of the teams, if I had limitless disposable cash to spend on jerseys would I drop money on any of them?
-I rank this as least important, but in some cases it's worth considering: is a given City Connect distinct enough from a team's regular jerseys? There's something to be said about a radical redesign or strange usage of color; not every jersey needs that, but some of these might make it work.

Some jerseys fit some criteria better than others, so I can't pretend I just basically tallied each category and averaged them out; some of these are just gut feelings. But as of now, and I reserve the right to change my mind the more I see some of these jerseys actually on the field, here's what I've got:

S Tier
1. Marlins nailed it. They picked a historical look by aping the Havana Sugar Kings, they thus appeal to the local baseball-mad Cuban population, the uniform is unique and distinct (red with white pinstripes and looking like a Cuban button-down shirt?! Sweet), it's more interesting than their regular unis, and they didn't get sucked into the stereotypical "80s Miami Vice Neon" style most Miami area alternate jerseys get. Guess they could've done more Marlins retro and gone teal crazy, but this works wonderfully, would buy.
2. Was iffy on San Diego at first, thought they could've gone full mustard brown and gold retro, but since Miami didn't go neon style it's nice that someone did. Reading up on the details about it I see the goal was to make a jersey to appeal both to fans in San Diego (by using "the pink of a Pacific Ocean sunset") but also to their fans in Tijuana, with these message of "one team, two cities". Super distinct look, bold, and an attempt to speak to the local culture in a different way.

A Tier
1. The Angels accomplished something that's really hard to do: make a "retro jersey that never was", and they pulled it off wonderfully. Has a full SoCal vibe to it that feels like it's out of the 60s-70s, even if California Angels jerseys back then didn't look this way. Plus, frankly, I think their regular jerseys kind of suck; I'd be tempted to make these their full time look. Would buy if I was a fan.
2. I'm not usually gung-ho on black jerseys, but if any organization has the right to try it and make it work, the White Sox are near the top of the list. Great use of gothic font to mirror a lot of architectural style of Chicago, proudly repping the Southside despite always being also-rans to the Cubs, and a bold look of black pinstripe pants to match the jersey top, solid work.
3. I thought I'd dislike the Rockies one, but the more I look at it the more I applaud it for the sheer "WHAT THE ACTUAL @#$%"-ness of it. I get what they're doing, and I'd argue it could use a bit of purple near the peaks to match the "purple mountain majesty", and I can't say for sure I'd make it a primary buy if I was a Rockies fan, but points for sheer balls.

B Tier
1. Washington's is understated, but distinct and "DC" enough that it fits the overall program. Part of me wishes they'd gone full cherry blossom pink for the jersey, but this works, and I like any time they use a W that isn't the curly one, which I think is kind of lame ("Team Walgreens!"). Would consider getting one if I cheered the Nats.
2. Astros got a ton of love when they came out, but I can't help but wish they'd gone more bonkers given how insane their old jerseys were. Still, arguably a step up from some of their current jerseys, which are kind of boring, so it deserves at least a B. Full uni with the dark pants works, too.
3. It's always weird to see the RED Sox wearing these, but the nod to the Marathon is a good one, and again, it's off the wall enough that I can appreciate it having allure and being different enough that hardcore fans would want one.
4. Kansas City's hasn't gotten a lot of love, but I like the little details: the Art Deco style, the fountain imagery, the powder blue undershirt, etc. Again, a bit understated, but the Royals are another team whose regular jerseys I find kind of dull, so if I was a fan I'd be down for one of these.

C Tier
1. Gotta be honest, my opinion of the Cubs' jersey here went up after visiting Wrigley this summer; I realized it's a jersey that I would want if I was a Cubs fan, since it's similar yet just different enough from the regulars to feel like a fun purchase, and it works nice with the different "C" on the cap. Case could be made for B tier on this one, but it did feel like it could've used a few more touches.
2. I know the DBacks one has gotten bashed a lot, but you know what? I hate most of Arizona's jerseys, so this one by default is their best one. Clean, crisp, simple, "Serpientes", cool, let 'er rip. Still, it hurts they didn't do something in purple and turquoise, since the cowards who owned the team ditched that look for their current "boring desert" look and assorted softball looking jerseys.
3. I want to like the Brewers one more than I do; I like integrating the area code and airport code for Milwaukee on the hat, the little touch of the stripes on the sleeve being like a beer with foam, finally putting "BREW CREW" on official merch, etc....but I can't help but feel they missed a chance to go full powder blue, pants included. It's like they wanted to get weird, but backed off before they could get TOO weird, when they should've taken the dive.
4. The Giants' one was a D for me at first, but after seeing them on the field, especially during a sunny day game in San Francisco? They work in that context. Not sure I'd buy one, though; the Giants regular home jersey is arguably the best in MLB, one of the best in all of sports, and a jersey that just kind of says "THE BRIDGE AND SOME FOG!" is one I can see some Bay Area folks rolling their eyes at.

D Tier
1. Points for having an all Dodger-blue from head to toe uniform. Outside of that? If they were a student of mine I'd mark this with "Where's the effort?" It's good to appeal to the local Latino population that's so vital to Los Angeles and its history/culture, but you literally just slapped "Los" on it, that's all you can do?! And the hat sucks.

Aaaaaand the NHL's Adidas Reverse Retros 2.0 have arrived. Think I liked the first group better, but there's a couple decent ones in here.

Devils' jersey is their 1982 jersey layout, but with the patterns of the Colorado Rockies, who they were before moving to NJ (also the same colors as the other team they were before *that*, the Kansas City Scouts). I actually think it's alright, but I much preferred their last Reverse Retro, the forest green one.

And yeah, that one's Vancouver, but it's blue, not black. They're using the old Johnny Canuck logo, I'm guessing it'll appear a bit better under real lighting and not a promotional setting.

Joy. The return of the Gorton's fisherman on the Islanders uniforms. Eh, I guess it beats the Black and White Brooklyn-era crap.

I decided to do a Tier ranking of the NHL Reverse Retro jerseys. I couldn't properly rank them. There's nothing absurdly bad about any of them, maybe just some flaws or preferences I don't care for. A lot of the lower ones are just not that different from their regular jerseys, or the Islanders with that awful Gorton's fisherman logo.



I'll make another post comparing the V1 and V2 Reverse Retros for the 31 teams that have both (minus Seattle, of course, who wasn't around for V1)

NHL Reverse Retro V2, and a look at V1 vs. V2

Not to double-post but here's my tier ranking of the V2 uniforms. In all comparison photos, V1 is on the left and V2 on the right.





Starting from the top (and tiers are in no particular order themselves)...

S Tier


Los Angeles Kings - Stellar choice. I was surprised that they never had a white version of this jersey, as their jerseys during this period were either purple or gold. As much as I love it, I'd say it's a downgrade from their previous effort. I'd have liked to see this design done in the colors of the silver and black era. Stellar nonetheless.


Florida Panthers - LOVE this uniform. While some want or think Reverse Retro should be a combination of previous and current eras, a few teams took a chance and went way out of the park. This is one of those, and they nailed it. A huge upgrade over the V1 effort, which stayed more true to combining current colors and the (not so) old logo.


Seattle Kraken - Being only a two year old team, the Kraken don't have any history to draw from. Granted, Seattle has plenty of hockey history and maybe if there's a future edition of Reverse Retro they can draw from that, but what they did come up with is a great design and gives a faux-retro feel to the jersey. Also I may be biased as I'm a default Kraken fan.


Washington Capitals - Much like their V1 jerseys, the capitals harken back to the design elements of their late 90s-early 2000's jerseys, this time opting to play with the colors from that time as well. A beautiful jersey, I'd say it's a lateral move from their V1 effort.


Montreal Canadiens - there has been much said about this jersey, both positive and negative. I fall on the positive side. I love the nod to the Expos blue road uniforms. As you'll see with a lot of the historic franchises, there's not a lot to be done. I'd say it's a step up from their V1 jersey. While beautiful, the V1 just being a color swap of their classic look takes points away. This definitely does not.


Vancouver Canucks - Much like the Canadiens, a lot has been said both very positive and very negative about the Canucks jersey. I love them. Drawing on their WHL history is a great idea, as the Johnny Canuck character is from that era. I would have loved to see them maybe do the classic flying V jersey or their skate jersey but in the modern colors, again, there's so many ideas for future iterations of RR. This is a great jersey.



A Tier


Chicago Blackhawks - I love these jerseys, but they're a definite downgrade from V1, so they don't quite make the top tier. They're simple, and for another team that's been consistent over the years, using a play on an early design is great. It might have looked better with their logo, but I get why they went with the wordmark. I'd say its a step down from V1, but that to me was a perfect RR.


Detroit Red Wings - very similar to the Chicago design. Too similar for some. Again, a legacy team that has largely been the same design through the years, the Wings went back to their NHL 75th anniversary design from 1991, which was a takeoff of the late 1920's Detroit Cougars design, this time in black and red. A drastic upgrade from their V1 jersey.


Vegas Golden Knights - Much like Seattle, the Golden Knights have virtually no history to draw on. Their V1 jersey was based on a former minor league franchise, and this V2 effort is completely fictional, playing off the glitz and glamor of Las Vegas. They nailed it. A great upgrade from V1.


San Jose Sharks - It was almost a foregone conclusion that the Sharks would honor the California Golden Seals at some point, and since their V1 set was a grey version of their typical set, they made the right choice to do it now. The only thing that would move these to the top tier is if they were teal instead of white. Upgrade


Minnesota Wild - basically just a color swap with their V1 set, which was their uniforms but in the old Minnesota North Stars colors. Hey if it ain't broke, why fix it? A slight upgrade on an already great jersey.


Edmonton Oilers - I really like this one, but I was a huge fan of the original gear jersey, so it was a given to rate high. As an RR jersey it's an upgrade from their V1, which was a nice jersey but too similar to their usual design.


Colorado Avalanche - Just a great looking jersey. Taking the Colorado state flag (definitely not the Colorado Rockies hockey team, no no) and combining it with their inaugural design template is just a clean look. It's a default downgrade from the stellar Nordiques homage they had last time, but great nonetheless.


Arizona Coyotes - The Coyotes took their V1 RR jerseys and just recolored it with earthtones and for a team in the desert, it works! I'd call it a slight downgrade from the previous RR but not by much.

B Tier


St. Louis Blues - The Blues went with a design based on THIS prototype from the mid-60's and the results are great. A massive step up from their garish previous effort.


Anaheim Ducks - the Ducks get an A for effort, but the current color palate does a disservice to the jersey they're based on. Without that previous history, these jerseys on their own would be exceptional. At least it's an upgrade from their super duck V1.


New Jersey Devils - This is the definition of a middle of the road jersey. I like what they're going for, incorporating their Colorado Rockies colors into the jersey, but it's just kinda...there to me. Though I get it, had they went with a color jersey it would have been too much like their V1. I'd call it a slight downgrade.


Boston Bruins - I really like these jerseys. Being that they're from Boston, it pains me to say that. The Bruins brought back a beloved third jersey from the mid-90s and reworked the colors. I'm just disappointed. Looking at their uniform history, they had so many choices of designs and colors to go with. That said, these are a definite upgrade from their boring V1.


Dallas Stars - the Stars went back to their inaugural jerseys after their move from Minnesota for this design, but with the current "victory green" instead of the original shade. The jersey is...it's there. It's fine. That's it. Still a tremendous upgrade from their last.


Buffalo Sabres - Blah. I'm not a fan of the goat head logo, and it being paired with the blue and yellow is particularly garish. Doubly disappointed that they went with a white jersey again. Big downgrade.

C Tier


Calgary Flames - The Flames have so much going for them. For my dollar, they've had the most consistently good uniform set through their history, even when changing with the times (looking at you, black for black's sake jersey. It's still fire), bar one design mistake, that damn trim coming up the middle of the jersey. Of course, that's the design they went with. Going with black again was a mistake. They went with it for V1 and kept it as a third jersey. You've got so much history to look at! Go with the original design from the 70's but in black, if that's what you want to do. Weak. Massive downgrade.


Winnipeg Jets - The Jets first effort, while being grey, which would normally get points taken off, was done wonderfully and went back to an awesome logo and set. They went back to the 90's for this jersey, but in the modern colors, minus red. It's okay, paling in comparison to its predecessor. Downgrade and by a lot.


Toronto Maple Leafs - The Leafs went back to the 60's for inspiration, and that's fine. But the Leafs, again as other legacy teams have found, have largely had the same basic jerseys for so long that it's hard to pay homage without just reproducing the same jersey. Having the logo contrast the color of the jersey makes this a step up from V1. If there's a V3 of RR, perhaps the Leafs should take a cue from their Heritage games and give a modern take on the old Toronto St. Pats designs.


Tampa Bay Lightning - I might have ranked this too high. Oof. Just...no. I get (I think) what they were going for, but oof again. They're attempting to pay homage to a third jersey that wasn't that well received in it's original run. At least they're using the old logo. Step down.


Columbus Blue Jackets - Not much to say. As we get lower on the list, that's a common problem. Again, it's just there. I guess these are a take on their current third jersey but in black. I'm not even sure of that. Downgrade.


Carolina Hurricanes - another current third jersey with a twist. Again, it's fine. That's about it. Obviously a downgrade when put next to their Whalers tribute.


Ottawa Senators - An homage to their Cup finals run in 06-07, but in black. Cool. A downgrade from V1 but dude. Those awesome Ottawa Senators from the teens-early 30's are RIGHT THERE!

D Tier


New York Islanders - Ugh. This dreaded logo. Their colors now are so bright and vibrant, they could have at least gone with that. Downgrade





Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Nashville Predators, New York Rangers - I put all of these together because they're all the same to me. Bland and uninspiring, and too much like their usual jerseys or ones they've worn before.

the Arizona Cardinals new unis were released this past week. They've upgraded from awful to bad.



Better than they had but a lot wrong. The wordmark on the red is awful. Brings the number down way too far. Also no piping or stripes on the pants stinks. The white are at least better but still not good. Yuck.

Those are... impressively bland. They feel like a gimmick jersey like the color rush thing or whatever Nike did. That's not minimalism, that's just the uniform equivalent of airlines switching to plain white liveries with just their logo on the tail and no other accents.

I'm probably the only Patriots fan who doesn't like those uniforms. I don't mind them as throwbacks but I don’t want to see them return full time.

It's probably because I relate those uniforms to being on the ass end of one of the biggest ass whoopings in Super Bowl history and those God awful late 80s/early 90s teams that were the biggest embarrassment in the league. They didn't start getting respectable until they switched uniforms (and hired Bill Parcells ).

Furthermore the name Patriots references the American army who fought the British for our independence. That army wore blue. The BRITISH wore red. It makes no sense!

The last few years feel like Nike and the NFL overreacting to the fans' general distaste toward the first era of Nike NFL jerseys from the early 2010s. Those uniforms went garishly overboard, from the Buccaneers' alarm-clock numbers to the Browns' huge "CLEVELAND" wordmark to the Falcons' gradient jersey to the entire Color Rush era.

But now, to counter that, it feels like a lot of the most recent uniform reveals are notable for how not notable they are. I'm talking the Cardinals' latest rebrand, the Jaguars' departure from gold as a signature color, and the Patriots' uninspired post-dynasty uniforms.

The theory out of the NFL and Nike has to be "How can they complain when we give them nothing?" Either that, or they're completely missing the point of what makes minimalist jerseys like the Cowboys, Packers, and Raiders so perfect. Minimalist does not have to equal boring, but being uninspired does.

These uniforms feel like a month long school project that somebody forgot about and then threw it together 5 minutes before class.

The very definition of zero inspiration ... kinda like the Arizona Cardinals. Shit, maybe they are the perfect uniforms after all.

I'm probably the only Patriots fan who doesn't like those uniforms. I don't mind them as throwbacks but I don’t want to see them return full time.

It's probably because I relate those uniforms to being on the ass end of one of the biggest ass whoopings in Super Bowl history and those God awful late 80s/early 90s teams that were the biggest embarrassment in the league. They didn't start getting respectable until they switched uniforms (and hired Bill Parcells ).

Furthermore the name Patriots references the American army who fought the British for our independence. That army wore blue. The BRITISH wore red. It makes no sense!

I love the Pat Patriots jerseys, but I had a feeling that there were some bad memories (specifically Super Bowl XX) that were affiliated with those jerseys and thus wouldn't be wanted regularly.
