Was there an official end to the Dungeon of Doom gimmick? I know the gimmick had been completely toned down by 96-97, but when did it end for good? Was it when Sullivan retired?

After Benoit beat Sullivan at Bash at The Beach they dropped the name.
Meng and Barbarian just went as The Faces of Fear from then on

They slowly faded out and quit being a thing all together after Benoit retired Sullivan transitioning to Jimmy Hart managing the Faces of Fear and whatever other lower card jobber that had nothing to do.

It's amazing that they were actually around for a while after the NWO had debuted.

It's amazing that they were actually around for a while after the NWO had debuted. That and Konnan was in the DoD and didn't fit at all. It took WCW like six months before they realized that Konnan fit way better with the NWO.

I feel like there was still a Dungeon in mid 1996, like September. The WCW magazine for November has on the cover, Meng, Barbarian, Jimmy, Kevin and newer members Maxx, Big Bubba, Braun and Konnan. I can't remember how long they all lasted. Bubba was in the NWO late 1996, early 97.

This topic made me think of a weird possible connection.
Dungeon of Doom basically ended when Sullivan lost a retirement match to Benoit at Bash at the Beach in July of 1997.
Raven's Flock debuted in August 1997.
Was this just a coincidence or was Raven's Flock an undercard replacement stable for Dungeon of Doom?
🤔

The "real" end of the Dungeon actually came when the health and safety inspector was finally forced to shut them down because they simply could not get their boiler working because as Hulk Hogan had confirmed their running water was just not hot.
However they could proudly state that they never had to deal with any Hulkamanic infestations.

It's amazing that they were actually around for a while after the NWO had debuted. I just remember a promo shortly after Hogan's heel turn where Sullivan mentioned how he planned to kill Hulkamania, and then Hogan did it himself or something similar.

After Sullivan retired, I believe they started calling it Jimmy Hart's First Family, but by then it was mostly guys who weren't cool enough to be in the NWO.

There's a pretty big gap in time between the DoD and the First Family, but they were essentially the same faction but with Jimmy Hart in place of Sullivan. DoD officially disbanded when Benoit beat Sullivan in 1997 with his career at stake. First Family was mid-1999. In between the two factions were some of the former members in random tag teams like the Faces of Fear or Hugh Morrus & Konnan (before Konnan joined the nWo) that kept everyone in the same orbit more or less.

There was also a great line in the 'Dungeon goes to Gotham' skit where Sullivan says "If everyone had listened to me a year and a half ago, we wouldn't be in this predicament"

I thought the Giant was still sort of affiliated with them when NWO Hogan beat him for the belt & then it completely dissolved when he joined the NWO. I could be remembering it all wrong though.
