Consider the humble headlock. You've seen it in perhaps every wrestling match or sports entertainment contest aired on TV since the days of Ray Stevens. But for a move so ubiquitous, you'd think it'd have ended a match by now, right? Can anyone remember such a thing happening? I am dead serious with this question; I know if I ever saw it happen, I would, to use an insider term, "pop."

probably, Randy Orton really had a good go at making people tap from that hold.

probably, Randy Orton really had a good go at making people tap from that hold. Granted, it was usually the audience.

Gorilla Monsoon explicitly told me on several occasions that no one ever beat anybody with a side headlock.

It's funny you should say that.
I've always mentioned how I'd love to see a 1920s wrestler gimmick.
Basically, he would have slicked black hair, a strong old school physique, waist high trunks, no knee pads. He would do really outdated wrestler poses and every match he's in would filmed with a black and white filter.
His moveset? Really old fashioned, underwhelming stuff like the Abdominal Stretch, the Headlock, the Claw and of course, his devastating finisher The Heart Punch!
This gimmick would be a massive success. I'm sure of it.

The closest I can think of is Chavo tapping to Stevie Ray's handshake so he could fight Eddy unscathed in WCW.
Or MJF pinning Darby Allin off a headlock takeover (after a brass nuckles shot) after vowing to do exactly that in their feud.

Wasn't Ed "The Strangler" Lewis's "Strangle Hold" a head lock?

I remember hearing about a like almost mythical early ROH match where CM Punk beat Christopher Daniels with an abdominal stretch after working his tumtum all match and always thought damn that sounds like some BULLSHIT even tho it sounds pretty neat.

I know Cactus Jack during one of his anti-hardcore heel stints in ECW took to using a shitload of headlocks to troll the crowd, but I don't know if he got wins off of them, or if he still resorted to his double arm DDT or piledriver.

Side note: but the abdominal stretch is legit. The Twister in MMA is little more than a laying abdominal stretch. Strangler Lewis’ choke was a side headlock IIRC, though I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone get a finish with it since roughly 1931. lol

I'm sure Paul Heyman once pitched that Mark Henry should have the headlock as a finisher as he probably could squash your head like a grape.
Not too different from Khali crushing basketballs.

Yes, actually. Andrew Everett to Biff Busik (Oney Lorcan) at BOLA 2015. It didn't end the match, Everett was actually shoot-tapping trying to tell Oney to work lighter.

Sounds like the perfect tag team partner for Colt Cabana if he ever dusts off his old "Matt Classic" gimmick.
