The part people aren't going to say, of course, is that the idea of booking Colt in this storyline where Jericho goes over every ex-ROH champ they can get access to is only pettiness toward CM Punk if you concede that CM Punk put effort into getting Colt to not be booked by the company and that booking Colt is going against his wishes. That's obviously not going to be said, but like. I don't see any way we can chalk this up to an act of pettiness without also conceding that booking Colt is an affront to Punk, and the logical extension of that sure is uh. Spicy with implications. Yeah, I think that's the main thing. Cabana isn't seen on TV for months on end and then suddenly appears when Punk is seemingly out of the door suggests there was a reason why he wasn't being used during that time. AEW can find time for everyone, even if it's only for a couple of shows before they're forgotten about again. Why was time never found for Cabana?

AEW sure showed Punk by having Colt lose on TV! Peeeeeeeettttttttttyyyyyyyyy Yeah, if Colt like squashed Jericho, while coming out to "cult of personality" that would be petty... just regular Colt coming out?

F*** the Anti-Punk crowd, and F*** AEW for siding with them!"

My main gist is he would have never been in that situation without the circumstances (he wasn't necessarily a main eventer in ROH) and because it was Jericho involved as well it adds another layer. Not screaming at the clouds but it was certainly an intended reciprocation.

Cabana isn’t very good anymore, hasn’t been for awhile, but I see why you keep him around. Hope that everybody has this out of their system now and he can return to being a decent midcard player for whatever ROH looks like next year.

Not screaming at the clouds but it was certainly an intended reciprocation. A very over midcarder with strong Ring of Honor ties is precisely the sort of person you would put in this sort of storyline. People who have held gold in ROH are trying to stand up for its memory against a dickhead who wants to defile said memory and use it to glorify himself. Here comes Colt, a midcard-at-best guy in AEW but who is likable enough to get a pop against this vile heel and lose without hurting someone higher on the card. Like it's really underselling Colt Cabana both for his place as an indie legend and for the deep respect that a lot of the company management has for him to write him off like he'd never have been in the spot if CM Punk hadn't made people want to talk about him. This claim only works if you really cut the guy out of history.

To be fair his only championships were with Punk in ROH...Again I don't really care as much about him being used and over-glamourized due to all of this it's just simply that it wasn't believable that he was chosen for any other reason than the drama.

Surprised at the negative reaction to the Cabana-Jericho match here, thought he looked great and the match was fun.
Colt also had an excellent match in September at the Mall of America show, so even if you didn't enjoy his work tonight, there's no way you can really say he's by any stretch not a fantastic performer anymore.

Fair. Tonight was not a good showing of his usual charisma and workmanship. That botch to the outside going to commercial as well as his pacing was rough. All things considered it does look like he will have a place in the future of roh and I hope that brings Nigel along.

Your personal valuation of Colt can be whatever it is, but that doesn't change like broad opinion of the guy as a talent before this happened, and Colt Cabana has genuinely been a high profile indie star for a great many years. You're letting your own view of the guy colour your perception of someone else's intention for booking him, but the idea that Colt is some nobody who wouldn't have a place in this story just does not have legs. That he's not a fitting choice? Sure, yeah, that's again your view of the guy. But he is objectively over and objectively well regarded.

I saw him in Jersey a few months ago. He’s fine-ish. Lots of others better than him on the roster, but that’s also not the role he’s supposed to fill anymore either, to be fair. I’m just ready to get whoever is back, back, and to move on from this stuff. All the match did was remind me of the stupidity that’s been hovering over AEW for months now.

That's all completely viable...In the end, my personal opinion stands that Cabana is much more beneficial behind the camera and has been for indie wrestling for years. I legit like the guy I just think like Lethal he is more entertaining with his gimmicks like Matt Classic than himself. He would not have made sense as a surprise world title contender if Sinclair/Delirious/Cary/Gabe were booking and he didn't make sense now outside of the drama, especially with how he was treated within the Dark Order. I am not out to completely demean the guy I just simply stated using him in this manner was petty given the circumstances but I am glad it means he will be a part of ROH going forward as he always should have been.

I very much liked how Jericho put Colt over as he came out, he seemed genuinely worried about him, he realized that Cabana winning the ROH title after 20 years would make an excellent story and he needed to step it up to avoid falling victim to fate.

I'm still holding out for a thank you run. He's one of the most important indie guys ever. From the early 2000's to the early 2010's with the podcast, and mid 2010's with PWTees he's been a trailblazer.

I'd love for him to win the ROH title, or for someone like Chris Hero to get it, but Colt's a former NWA champion, so at least he's been a world champion before.

Nice to see Colt again, some of the takes here are a little surprising.

Aren't you both right? Colt being chosen for this spot and getting the pop that he did is directly related to his part in the drama. But, he's only involved at all because CM Punk is offended by his existence and was happy to try and derail a whole company to point that out.

I hope it was 100% intentional. And I hope CM Punk threw his phone at the wall, and broke it. And then texted Hausman on another phone, and told him Colt Cabana broke his phone, and Hausman's all "OMGCOLTISAMENCACEWONTSOMEONEPLEASETHINKOFTHECMPUNKS!" on Twitter.
