So, the Punk/Elite drama has kind of sucked all the attention from anywhere. Understandably.
But this thread is a combination of a few things.
- AEW doing away with a new direction for MJF for the same old stuff.
- AEW “planning” something so far ahead and then suffering as a result.
I understand both. I understand that you want familiar and reliable top heel MJF during an unstable time. I understand that, in the innocent days of June or whatever, you had no idea that Punk would implode physically and emotionally. I understand that Max needed time off. There’s this photo of him with a fan, sort of smiling, and apparently, he told her not to post online until he returned. I get all that.
But nothing was really gained from MJF’s viral promo. He could have been written off differently. He was already kind of written off, as it was. He’s back to the ‘bidding war in 2024’ stuff. We don’t know if he signed an extension or not, because no one is leaking (yet). And though the WWE stuff will play a minor or moderate role in his feud with Moxley, that could have been accomplished without the shoot stuff. We already knew he felt this way, and honestly, the voicemail from TK at All Out seemed like a way to quickly end any of that potential feud. So, then—what? AEW put everything on hold for a Punk/MJF feud that may not happen. AEW might have kept MJF off TV for longer than intended for that feud that may not happen. Punk may be a mega heel if and when he’s back. Just… why?
It’s kind of like how AEW put a lot of eggs in an Undisputed Era/Elite feud that’s off the table. It’s kind of like how Kip stood in the crowd for six years for a reveal that could have been built up more effectively with just a few weeks. I applaud AEW for seemingly calling the audible with The Acclaimed.
Let’s hope they do more of that now that Tony has seen how quickly things can fall apart.
