Shock horror!
The late comedian Bill Hicks once said
“ By the way if anyone here is in advertising or marketing…kill yourself. It’s just a little thought; I’m just trying to plant seeds. Maybe one day they’ll take root – I don’t know. You try, you do what you can.
(Kill yourself.)
Seriously though, if you are, do.
Aaah, no really. There’s no rationalisation for what you do and you are Satan’s little helpers. Okay – kill yourself.
Seriously. You are the ruiner of all things good.
Seriously”
While the advising people to kill themselves is tasteless.. He was right mostly.
Advertising and marketing always ruin good things.
I understand that it's sort of needed for people needing revenue, and small companies needing exposure.
But still they need to be reigned in... The entire internet is a hive of headache inducing ads. Almost everywhere look these days there's an ad. You pumping gas = ads, driving behind a bus or truck = ad.. Some new cars play ads on the car lcd screen now when you start them up, some TV models show an ad on the menu screen when you turn it on.
Podcasts a lot of The big name ones are now apart of podcast networks.. So guess what = ads! Not just ad reads now.. Actual advertising that interrupts the podcast. It's wierd hearing ads for Australian companies on This American Life. But I can put up with them, they are short and they back go the show quickly.. For now
But the worst example of something good being ruined is Youtube. YouTube is just ads now.. An YouTuber that gets 1000+ view per video are almost unwatchable now. You get two ads at the start (if your lucky the first one will be skippable after 5 seconds, then it skips both) then an ad break every two minutes. It's a turn off, a real turn off.. If see someone I sub to has made a video that's longer then 20 minutes, unless its someone I really like... I skip the whole thing. I’ll tell you what the advertising though is effective .. For youtube premium
Look I can't afford to join everyone I like’s patreon, or sub to their twitch channel.. twitch another thing that's been ruined. Ads that mute a live stream, yes just mutes them, you can keep watching the video on a tiny screen in the corner.
Ads ruin everything.

I literally just want to pay real f'ing money to watch shows I want to watch. Nope. Can't pay enough to 100% remove ads.
Then you think you found the unicorn app/channel/website that will let you watch 100% ad free? Ha ha sucker, 6 months later BAM it's all ads.

I think this was a huge reason for the initial success of Netflix. Yes there was the ability to binge or watch content when you wanted but you also got it without commercials.

This made me remember two great advertising based stories. The Space Merchants by Frederik Pohl is the story of an advertising executive trying to succeed in a world of huge trans-national corporations. Mission Earth by L. Ron Hubbard is an absolutely awful ten book series which includes a subplot about using advertising to weaken humanity so they can be conquered more easily. Terribly written. Absolute garbage. I read all ten books because I couldn’t bear to NOT see all the mangled cars and bodies in the glorious train wreck that this series was.

it's why I have the ad-free tier on Peacock
I tried watching a movie on the cheapest tier there once with ads------- oh my god
ads were literally every 10 minutes, and I couldn't skip past them
immediately upgraded my plan - money well spent

Thank god for the BBC. They’re not perfect and they’ve done some very questionable things in the past but after just getting back after three weeks of watching TV in the US with an insufferable amount of ads, watching the latest Attenborough documentary for an hour with no interruptions almost makes up for all the bad stuff!

I’ll tell you what the advertising though is effective .. For youtube premium Exactly. Which isn't even worth it since the bigger content channels have paid ads that you have to manually skip through. You pay a fee to not see ads, only to be bombarded with more ads. Like with Twitter. It hooks you with 0 or limited ads, then I checked the other day and 2 of the first 11 posts in my feed were from people I followed. Every site nowadays is basically an ice cream truck that is ducking down alleyways and knocking over trash cans to slow you down. You either have to have the patience of a saint or get out your CC #. I miss the old internet, when it didn't resemble Times Square.

Like not over the counter stuff... but like ask your doctor about prescription medicine... like f*** no... I'm not asking my doctor about some random ass drug because it was on the TV.

We like to have Game Show Network as sort of our “play in the background” channel and I swear 75% of ads on that channel are for medicines. The most annoying one being some woman who no longer gets migraines and is able to drive whilst wearing the stupidest, fakest grin. Although these ads did give me one great laugh when one of the side effects read out was “a rash on the perineum”. This was then followed by text on the screen saying something like “the Perineum is the area between the genitals and the anus”.

Unbelievable,
Google must have seen this thread, cause I just started to watch the latest Wrestling Bios video and for the first time I got block of 5 midrolls.. It was always 2. And only the fifth ad was long enough to be skippable.
It just gets worse.

I'm not sure if this a new thing with his SiriusXM deal, but there's ads before the show starts. They're not even the cute ones where Sona, Matt, and him joke around. Just a straight ad read. You can't even watch something on youtube with those jarring five second ads. Then they expect us to pony up nine dollars a month for commercial free. Screw that.

You're right... it's awful. I can deal with it for a show (I'm watching old '96 Raws and it doesn't bother me really). However, I tried watching a movie back when the service was new and I haven't since then.... you aren't wrong about it being at least 60 seconds of adds every 10-15 minutes. Just awful! I haven't even put a movie on through Peacock since.

What I hate about advertising is that there's no escaping it. You can't just turn off your TV or your computer because it's everywhere, and more than it ever was. It's like living in a really shit version of Blade Runner.

Sometimes when watching YT through the TV, I've had ads (thankfully skippable), that have been like 15 - 40 minutes long, I mean I don't get what they are thinking there

I'm rather numb to it. If it's a 30 second ad, I can go do something else if I need to while muting the ad.
The thing that absolutely grates at me is when the sound is obnoxiously louder than whatever I'm otherwise watching or listening to. That to me should be illegal.
And while I'm on it, the leaps and bounds we have made in regards to media, that there has been this absolute devolution when it comes to sound editing. For some unearthly reason, when I'm watching a program, the sound levels spike and then soften constantly, so I'm playing with my remote to try to hear what is going on, as well as make sure I don't blast the neighbors with sound. I don't have a private theater to watch this in, just my living room...so fix the sound so that I'm going to get a steady level no matter what. VHS did this perfectly for DECADES...so what happened?
