I like Buddy, but I never thought he was a guy AEW needed to sign in the first place. I was honestly shocked NJPW didn't go after him. He seems like such a fit for the Jr./NEVER Division

He's heading back to the WWE to be with his girlfriend. I guess the big thing is that in AEW there were far more wrestlers who could put on the same matches that he was on 205 live or Main Event while having more personality, if he wants to head back to the fed then he can be the workhorse guy there but he always wrestled like Kirkland Kenny Omega.
Also apparently he did his tour of Australia while he was away healing up his injury without informing the front office.

I assume Hunter gave all these guys his Tough Enough speech.
"You're on the road. What's your wife doing? Don't know..."

Didn’t he get taken off TV after he debuted for doing independent dates when he signed with AEW without telling the office? Or did I imagine that??
Anyway he is a super talent but he’s one of those guys who I think will never really fit in at any company he works for.

I like the guy's work, but he admittedly does not strike me as the most prudent guy. That's a really stupid move.

What a difference half a year can make. The thread for his debut was like 95% "great signing, he's an amazing talent" now it's like 75% "he's nothing special, won't be a loss."
I'm not sure where he would fit best. I don't think he's interesting enough to be a big deal in AEW/WWE/NJPW. He could probably be a main eventer in Impact but I don't know if they're even paying decent money these days.

Working with his wife for a salary probably much greater than what he’s making now to be on TV - once, twice a month? Yeah, what a goober! If WWE is paying Buddy a much higher salary to come over, I guess Hunter is the real goober. This reads as total sour grapes.

Couldn't find the thread when he debuted but I found this one from about a year ago when Meltzer said they passed on signing him - officialfan.proboards.com/thread/614156/meltzer-says-passed-buddy-mathewsMost of the responses are pretty much, "He's good but yeah, why WOULD they bring him in?"

Dude should have went to Impact, and used Josh Alexander as a template for how to play to your strengths. Matthews needs a moniker. Something other than a 1950's kid brother name. It's cringey and rather embrassing. Like dude, your name is Buddy. Come on. But Josh Alexander on its own, not a bad name, but "The Walking Weapon" Josh Alexander? Okay, you have my attention. Then dude backs it up in the ring. Matthews needs something like that, something before his name to even have a chance of being taken seriously. "The Ginge Minge" Buddy Matthews. See? Better The man is talented as hell, but he needs to figure out WHO he is beyond "wrestles really good". He needs a NJPW or Impact to develop. He needs a hook. But then again......don't we all.....*wink*

"Legit" Leyla Hirsch is about as nothing an epithet as I can think of, but y'know what, it adds to her, even if it just means her theme song can have a one-word title and we can all say, "Yes, of course."

I got a random like in the thread from just a year ago about AEW passing on Matthews, and it's interesting skimming the thread, because it's not all the same people or anything, but so much of the sentiment at the time was just about where it is now. He'd get lost in the shuffle, he should go elsewhere and shine more, he wouldn't be able to stand out as much. This run hasn't done Buddy a whole lot of good, but it's also not really soured all that much opinion on him, either.
