Ironically the only international demographic that enjoyed Seinfeld more than Friends were the descendants of the Moops. That's not Moops, you jerk. It's Moors. It's a misprint! Ironically the only international demographic that enjoyed Seinfeld more than Friends were the descendants of the Moops. Some guy attacked the Bubble Boy! GET 'EM! Neither of them were as popular as Cheers. Ted Danson made $800,000 an episode. Would you stop with the Ted Danson? Did people really watch these shows? Like... I've met like one person in real life who is a fan of Friends. But before her... Noone. Like ever. Like you, I knew very few people who watched the show. The theme song was huge and I heard it on the radio a lot.

Seinfeld was a cultural zeitgeist here in the US, without Seinfeld there likely would be no Friends. It’s quite hard to explain just how huge it actually was. The early and middle seasons where George is working for the Yankees is some of the best TV out there. It got kind of silly towards the end but that’s too be expected I suppose.
Seinfeld is to Network TV as a band like Nirvana was to MTV and rock radio. Just a huge shifting force.
IMO Friends is one of the least funny popular comedies to ever exist. Just bad TV for me at least.

Domestically, for sure. Internationally? Friends left Seinfeld in the dust. In the UK, Seinfeld never really caught on and trailed Friends, Frasier, and Mad About You in the ratings. At the time Seinfeld was shown late on a Tuesday night on BBC2, as a double bill with The Larry Sanders Show. Friends was shown on Channel 4, 9pm prime time on a Friday night. The BBC did very little to advertise either show despite their Stateside popularity.

I thought it was this thread but can't find it, someone mentioned Jason Alexander played George differently in the early seasons-trying to channel another actor. Who was the person he was trying to copy?

I thought it was this thread but can't find it, someone mentioned Jason Alexander played George differently in the early seasons-trying to channel another actor. Who was the person he was trying to copy? Alexander's said he played George more Woody Allen esque at first. It wasn't until The Revenge episode when George came back and pretended he didn't quit his job that changed. During production, Alexander said there was no way anyone would act like that, and Larry David explained that he himself actually did that. It was that revelation that made him realize George was really a version of David and thus played the character more like him after that.

Here in Belgium Seinfeld had a late night time slot while Friends was in prime time. Friends was a cultural juggernaut and never stopped having reruns. My 15, year old son knows and has watched it while barely anyone I've met who's younger than me has heard of Seinfeld. Pretty much the same in Austria/Germany. Seinfeld also premiered here six years after it did in the US, compared to Friends' two. Friends was also VERY agrressively advertised before its permiere (which is why I refused to watch it), Seinfeld I had only heard of years later. I have yet to see an episode of either show. The Nanny, Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, Family Matters and even Step By Step seem to be much more fondly remembered over here.
