VAR would overturn that call so much.

So it’s canon that you have to tap three times?
Kinda like that one match where thy get highlighted how a tag partner can only interfere once with a warning.

That suuucked, especially because I can totally see people harassing Jessicka online for that even tho it was a storyline.

So the Brazilian tap is a thing in grappling competitions where someone can tap on the mat once or twice but the match continues because either the ref doesn't see it or the competitor doesn't tell the ref to stop the fight. In theory, it's done as a way to trick the opponent into letting go of a hold since he "tapped" but it's a risky trick to pull off. Since apparently GUNTHER didn't told the ref to stop the match and he can make the argument that he hit the mat as a way to get to the ropes, it's up to the ref whether the tap counts as the end of the match or not.

I just don't get why they felt the need to do that when they already were planning on having Gunther cheat to win. That's all you need to protect Sheamus and get a rematch. This just made your reffing look more stupid than usual and took the sails out of the match. Once that happened, the outcome was a foregone conclusion.

Yeah, that sucked. If the ref hadn’t literally been looking in the direction of GUNTHER’s hand tapping out (I.e distracted by Sheamus?), it would have come off better.

Honestly, kinda like angles like this. Refs in sport make game altering mistakes all the time. Adds to the emotion

Jessica Carr is so cute. 😍 I will stand by her decision and say that Sheamus screwed Sheamus.

Must be some unofficial rule of three thing in wrestling. Counts of three for a pinfall, drop the arm three times for a pass out technical submission, ring the bell three times to start a match… Tap the mat three times to signal a submission?
(Sheamus would’ve won if it were under New Jack’s affirmative action rules)

Could also just be that Gunther verbally said no or something since she clearly is looking at his face before she waves it off.
(though a lot of people are mentioning the Brazillian Fake Tap technique in the replies.)
3 is usually the magic number in wrestling... so... I could see it...

First - people hit the mat all the time in submissions
Gut more importantly - ever since I got into wrestling in the 90s my biggest pet peeve has been when guys are in submissions and can blatantly reach the rope...but shake their arm, make a fist etc. then grab it
Attitude era and early 2000s was the worst. Guys like the Rock would have arm bent 2 inches from the rope and act like it was an impossible task simple moving their hand towards the rope lol

It's one of those things that I like, but really really needed explained better. Kind of like when they decided in NXT that there is only one pin/submission break up attempt despite EVERY tag match in the last decade not having that rule and Mustache Mountain's Tyler Bate looked like the dumbest guy on the planet sitting on the apron not helping Trent.

I didn’t get up to watching the match yet, just looking at the gif that definitely didn’t look like Gunther was tapping out to submit. Came off like slapping the mat for adrenaline/momentum. Or they’ll go with the Brazilian fake tap angle.

Honestly doing the fake out tap is a great spot, but it didn't lead to Sheamus breaking the hold due to it so it just feels kinda of a waste of a great spot

Hopefully they're giving Sheamus an out for a rematch. After that match and ovation at Clash I really want him to win the IC title and get the grand slam.
If Sheamus got screwed by a ref call then the Brawling Brutes win tonight he's more than earned another shot. Vince would probably have had him lose clean twice and then book the third match just because with no real storyline reason for it. I'm hoping they actually have a plan here and there was a reason for that finish.
I think it would be a good idea to put Sheamus' career on the line in the third match to raise the stakes even higher.
