This title-to-post letdown is steeper than if you advertised "former Van Halen frontman" and it was Gary Cherone.

Judging by recent history, this means he’s already signed and about to debut tomorrow.

Always liked Taven and looking forward to seeing how he's presented with the WWE machine behind him.
One thing I'll say about Taven is that he's at his most enjoyable watching perform live in the arena, and while I do enjoy him on-screen, I don't think his previous television presentations have been able to really close that gap. I think you could hear this reflected in his 2019 ROH run where his matches were longer and the continuously growing reactions he'd elicit midway through them.
We've seen in the recent past the WWE machine really help finely tune Trevor Lee and Punishment Martinez, and I think there's enough worth honing in on with Taven to give him the same benefit of the doubt for a shot.

I once went to an indy show that advertised Rey Fenix vs a local talent. Fenix, however, couldn't make it due to travel issues. His replacement, inexplicably, was Matt Taven. This, to me, is the equivalent of ordering a steak dinner but they tell you they're out of steak, and then the chef comes out and spits in your face.

Anyone give a rundown of what he’s like as a talent? Decent enough in the ring, but I find his character and promos cringeworthy. He's a tag team/mid-card champion at best, really.

I've seen him in a few clips here and there, nothing that made me want to go out of my way to see him perform.
Maybe he'll do better in WWE.

On one hand, even Hunter's fetish for Actually Kinda Boring dudes won't propel Taven to the top of the card here like he was in the post-Elite ROH downer years.
On the other hand, the fact that the 'safe bet dude who WWE doesn't want so let's push him to the top of our company despite that being a bad idea just because he's who we've got' guy is getting attention from WWE is hilarious to me even if we're a few years and a whole ROH buyout removed from when they tried to use his name to sell a co-promoted MSG show with New Japan.

Anyone give a rundown of what he’s like as a talent? Boring. Nothing that he does is offensively bad or repulsive or anything but he's just boring.

He's a good heel and could work well with NXT young talent & make them look good. He's definitely not a top of the card guy and ROH kinda had to make him one in their latter years.
I do like him calling the fans melvins and screaming "Im Matt Taven" at opponents.

Anyone give a rundown of what he’s like as a talent? He was Ring of Honors answer to Justin Credible. While talent were leaving the company left, right and center, RoH put the belt on him because they knew he wasn't going to get signed by WWE or AEW.
