I can't for the life of me figure out what the Patriots were doing at quarterback going into last night's game.
Bill Belichick said the plan was always to start Mac Jones and then go to Bailey Zappe in relief, but it was also reported by ESPN at halftime that Belichick said he would go back to Jones at some point in the second half, but in the post-game press conference he said the game got too out of hand for him to make that move.
So, let's get this straight: if the Patriots are in a close game in the second half and Bailey Zappe is still slinging it, Belichick's going to suddenly hand the keys back to Mac Jones? How's that going to play out in the huddle, on the field, and in the stands?
So now the Patriots find themselves in a dilemma where Mac Jones was booed by the home fans in his first game back from injury after grossly underperforming, but then the supposed savior Bailey Zappe also showed that he might be more Cassel than Brady with the way he played in the second half. Now the Patriots really might be in the midst of that old adage: "If you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterbacks."

Last night, Chicago proved that you can shut down a borderline college playbook by making simple adjustments and they did just that. There's a huge segment of the fanbase that took the "Zappe fever" nonsense from Sports radio to heart. Look, wins are wins, but Zappe almost beat a crap Packers team and then beat 2 crap teams by doing the absolute bare minimum. So idiots were then making Brady/Bledsoe comparisons between a 2nd year and Rookie QB without seeing the bigger picture. Well, fine. You guys got what you wanted, so if this blows up, you can't get angry

Bill is the leader and he f***ed around and found out with this game. he's been playing games with Mac,, Bailey and media about the the QBs situation becausehe gets off on that. As a Patriots fan he got what he deserved. Finding a way to hurt 2 young QBs. very impressive BB.

Bill is the leader and he f***ed around and found out with this game. he's been playing games with Mac,, Bailey and media about the the QBs situation becausehe gets off on that. As a Patriots fan he got what he deserved. Finding a way to hurt 2 young QBs. very impressive BB. That's exactly the problem. You can say that the fans wanted Zappe, and yes, they were chanting his name early and often on Monday night, but Bill Belichick has never let fan sentiment sway his on-field decision making. By playing coy all week, both with the media and apparently in-house, Belichick undermined both of his quarterbacks and made his team feel like there's no plan in place. All indications are that even Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe were unsure of who was starting Monday night until minutes before the game. That kind of lack of faith and lack of leadership can fragment a team and cause a self-inflicted quarterback controversy. Compare it to 2001. Even when Drew Bledsoe was healthy enough to return to play, Bill Belichick was steadfast and confident that Tom Brady was the starting quarterback. He didn't play games and say "we'll see" or "it's day to day." He showed faith in Brady and made a commitment to the plan he had in place, even at the risk of hurting Bledsoe's feelings or losing the veterans in the locker room who backed Bledsoe. So what's the plan now? Mac Jones continues to heal from his ankle injury, but is the plan going to continue to be to rotate Jones and Zappe until someone emerges as the frontrunner? Did Zappe do enough on Monday night, or was he exposed in the second half? Is it going to continue to be "day to day?" Or can we get some concrete plan as to who the quarterback is both on Sunday against the Jets and going forward? At this point, I just want a plan in place. Hell, to quote The Joker in "The Dark Knight": Nobody panics when things go according to plan, even if the plan is horrifying.
