After many years Gamera returns to our screens with a Netflix original movie and/or tv show .. not sure yet.
The Guardian of the Universe joins Godzilla, Gundam and Ultraman and getting their own Netflix originals too.

If anyone hasn’t watched the watch along to the MST3K episode of Gamera vs Guiron that they did during the last MST3K kickstarter…I recommend it so wholeheartedly. I’ve watched it like a dozen times. It is hysterical from start to finish.
its still on YouTube

Of the 12 Gamera movies, I've seen 11. Haven't seen the 2006 reboot (the last one).
The first one is good for a Godzilla ripoff.
The second is good for a sequel to a Godzilla ripoff.
The third through the seventh are weird. That's around when a group of American distributors started working with the producers to make the movies directed at American kids who ran to the theaters to see giant monsters. The movies started having American as well as Japanese children.
The eighth was weirder. Almost like they wanted to introduce the 'space princess warrior hero' character as a new franchise and just have Gamera as a way to get their foot in the door. The creator demanded that Gamera dies at the end.
The three movies from the 90s are excellent and highly recommended.

Better have the SPACE WOMEN from Gamera: Super Monster in it! I crushed hard on the main one when I was a kid.
I still find the Steven Segal connection to the 90s ones bizarre. I always loved how the Gamera movies, new and old, were mysteriously ultra violent at times - and the 90s ones translated that dynamic well.
My favorite one of all time is Gamera vs Barugon (It's a complete package to me: Great human characters/drama, fun new monster, best looking suits/minitures of the series, and the best musical score of the series as well). Gamera vs Gyaos is also great as is the one with Guiron and Jiger. But man, the ones where he fights sea monsters are so droll and terrible (Viras and Zigra). Super Monster is great from a camp perspective and if you watch it you can skip Viras and Zigra. If you like the classic Gameras check out the studios other giant monster DAIMAJIN (Though the trilogy is a bit samey - I think the best one is the second one IIRC because its the one with the bird pecking a dude's eye out).
The relaunch (Guardian of the Galaxy) is a revelation - looks great, well written, fun characters, etc. Blows all of the Heisei Godzilla movies except for Return of Godzilla out of the water. Though its all down hill from that high - Legion is okay but feels like a rip off of Godzilla vs Destroyah at times (Though the effects and the monster are so much better). And Revenge of Iris is sorta wet fart with a lame open ended finale.
Gamera the Brave is a soft reboot so it has all the terrible hallmarks of such an endeavor (namely a confusing and muttled backstory - especially because it takes elements from the original Gamera and from the 90s Gamera). It's created in such a way that screams KIDS MOVIE (Gamera is a baby in it!), but the monster violence in it makes it sorta distressing to watch in that context. Very weird.
Either way, always looking forward to more Gamera! Though I am interested to see if this another animated thing like Netflix's Godzilla stuff (Ugh) or what.
