Those little account that get by on using the API to get millions of followers might be tricked into getting the $8 package to keep their internet ego afloat, especially with the long time accounts. Then the people who stick around for those accounts have no reason to leave and can be monetized somehow. And it makes him look a little less evil to the idiots. I mean who hates cats?! Commies and dogs that's who!

Time for Business Cat to trick him into lowering the price for that, too.

I highly doubt much of any company would bother actually paying that given how easy it is to confirm an account's legit just by the URL or existing traffic. Some people might momentarily mistake a parody Nintendo account for the real one but not enough are going to for it to be worth Nintendo wasting $12,000 a year on a mark that probably wouldn't really do much to alleviate that anyway.

I want to believe that, but after Eli Lilly's stock got crashed by trolls last year, I can see some brands not willing to take the chance. Irony of ironies, Elon's last cash grab verification scheme failing so miserably might be the best thing he has going for his latest cash grab verification scheme.

just logged in to twitter on desktop:
wasn't there several laws brought in to prevent websites & companies from basically taking that sort of data and selling it on which is why every website and online service now has to check that you want to give out that sort of information?
musk is just asking for large fines to be handed out so he can shutter twitter quicker and blame everyone else for doing so isnt he?

When violating a law just results in a fine, rich people like Musk view laws as optional.

When violating a law just results in a fine, rich people like Musk view laws as optional. These arent small fines, if it violates the EU laws then it could be €10 million or 2% of worldwide profit or €20 million or 4% of worldwide profit in fines depending on severity of the breaking the laws, and it likely wont just be a one off fine they'll go for twitter multiple times. He's playing with fire if he breaks data protection laws.

In spite of Musk's overinflated net worth coming down a peg or ten, 10-20 million euros still isn't a whole lot to someone of his obscene wealth.
Only consequences his ilk understand is if you took away his toys or (I can dream) actually send him to jail.

I have to admit that I don’t even use Twitter but this is just one of the most interesting thread’s I’ve read through. It really does seem like Musk is trying to make Twitter bottom out as fast as possible lol

It really does seem like Musk is trying to make Twitter bottom out as fast as possible lol 'Tis part of the plan. He's reshaping Twitter in his own image in order to make it more biased towards people who share the same views as he does. Whether Twitter continues on or dies in the process matters not, because as far as Musk is concerned, he already accomplished his goal.

It already was, but he's too shortsighted to see that. Guys like Tim Pool were open about having a direct line to important people at the site and were protected from the consequences of their actions, just on the DL, and people were bombarded by links to right wing media all the time, and not even blocking the accounts of the outlets in question would make it stop. All he did was blunder in and destroy all the benefit of the doubt, and any belief they'll eventually do the right thing with bad actors is gone.

For some God unknown reason my feed is filled with the tweets of Graham Linham and India Willoby. I don't follow either of them. And this was even before Thursday's Question Time.
If it wasn't for gaming retro and modern, and my books I don't think i would be on Twitter.
On the upside I do like that Julian "Jazza" Rigall still tweets and replies alot. Big name in the UK gaming journalism back in the late 1900s.

This is the guy who was supposedly going to colonise Mars. He wanted to be Vilos Cohaagen from Total Recall, in charge of the domes and able to dictate which of his miners live and died in his pursuit of even more wealth and power.
