James Cameron is trying to get attention to sell his bloated, over budget franchise that somehow made zero cultural imprint despite its box office success. I don’t see Navi cosplay at comic con. I don’t hear anyone talking about Avatar irl or online. It made all that money and people just shrugged.

It was a very pretty movie that basically took a bunch of cowboys vs Indians tropes and threw them into the prettiness. It was all style, no substance.
Also, it unironically used the name unobtanium for the bad guys macguffin.

The movie he has been promoting for like the last 2 years and says if he doesn't rank like top 5 all time they don't even break even

I won’t take any criticism at Thanos. Marvel, Disney, the graphics team, whatever, did an amazing job there.

Can't we just be left alone to enjoy the Marvel movies and let the snobby directors make their outhouse bollock movies?

Don’t know why James Cameron is taking shots at Marvel
It would be like someone at Taco Bell saying KFC tastes like shit…
If you don’t know what I’m on about.. those restaurants are owned by the same corporation.

I am pretty sure he sees it as Neptune vs Spongebob Neptune (Marvel can create 10,000 burgers that looks good but are shit) but my little burger I gave tending loving care to is the best thing ever *Ignore that my burger cost a shit ton of money*

I think it's because he sees Marvel as the only entity capable of "taking away" his records. You can't tell me that's not why the first Avatar was re-released in China after Endgame beat its record.

Honestly given Cameron's well known ego, I would have more surprised if he hadn't taken shots at the MCU at this point.
Avatar 2 will likely do fine, and probably break even long term, but its hard to imagine the fairly shallow nature of the franchise thus is capable of effectively launching a multimedia universe like Disney/Marvel have. The MCU has the ability the pivot and go for (relatively) lower budget stuff; I don't think Avatar can.

I'm kind of curious to see how Avatar 2 will do, simply because I can't see it doing nearly as well as it needs to just to break even. Almost anyone I know who saw the first one mainly cared about the technology being what it was for the time; no one cared about the story, and no one bothered to watch it ever again. Between that, the technology not being a hook anymore, the amount of time between the movies and Cameron's repellent ego, I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't do well. At least, in North America; I'm not sure how other countries/continents felt about the flick. I think China is where it'll probably make the bulk of its earnings, which could still be a great showing, but $2B to break even great? I have a hard time seeing that happening.

Avatar did get a cult following of fans who loved the story, wrote fan fiction for it and whatnot, but it wasn’t like a super massive thing on the Harry Potter/Star Wars/Disney/Marvel/DC tier. I’d say it’s below the Power Ranger/MLP/Ninja Turtle/Transformer level. When I type in “Avatar conventions” I get one page about a meet up for Cameron fans, but I mostly get links to “CabbageCon” and Last Airbender/Korra things.

Can I assume the plot is 'hoomans bad' again for Avatar 2?

I hope the plot of the next Avatar movie is like the Oddworld games where people are harvesting the Na'vi as an ingredient for their delicious meat pies and using their tears as a tasty new beverage.

I wish Disney had the balls to make the plot that Fresh Na'vi Fetus Blood is the ultimate version of Viagra/Tiger Blood/Rhino Horn/*insert random Super-Penis-Magic-Dust-Here* that you can buy for like 5 bucks a glass at Arby's... then we've have a crazy f@#%ing movie with a wacky plot that would be fun to watch. The Na'vi would be like "Wait... you kill us and drink our babies for WHAT?" Then they'd go all Super Saiyan and shit. By the end of the movie the Na'vi are on a crusadeto wipe out humanity, or at least eat all our babies.

The best bits aren't even about Marvel or DC.
Sure, the only reason you're not in mainstream movies because they're not good enough for you, Stephen.
Big Ryback vibes, there.
