From Fightful Select:
Randy Orton probably isn't headed back any time soon.
Randy Orton has been out of action since late May when he and RKBro teammate Matt Riddle dropped the Raw Tag Team Championships to the Usos. Shortly after, Fightful Select reported that Orton had a "significant" injury and that he was expected out through the end of the year. We've learned even more on that.
Fightful has learned that Randy Orton required a fusion in his lower back that would keep him out of action for an extended period of time. The surgery has already happened, though we don't know when. His wife had posted a picture of him around the operation, however. There were some in WWE that told us they'd be fortunate to have him back after such a long career and the significance of the injury. We've also heart from some in the company that says that when he was initially injured, Orton insisted he would eventually return. However, there are no creative plans in order for Randy Orton and no timetable for his return.
As of now, Randy Orton is contracted through 2024, though we don't know if contract time could be added or frozen due to injury.

I hope he takes all the time he needs to heal up before deciding if he's gonna get back in the ring.

If it's that serious he should probably consider if not calling it a career at least reducing to only working special occasions. Know it can be hard to say goodbye and all but he has nothing to regret if he calls it a wrap now.

Sounds f***ing rough. Orton’s been going at it full-time for a minute. And that’s with a bunch of issues. He’s gotta slow down. With the popularity surge that came with RK-BRO, he needs to just become an attraction.
Miss him though. Hope he comes back and can go.

If he’s able then he should definitely be on a Brock schedule with only a few matches a year. He’s earned it already even without the injury.

If Randy has had fusion on his L5, then it looks like his career is over. It's a shame that he probably won't be able to go out on his own terms, but the dude has had a first ballot Hall of Fame career and dude was one of the most over on the roster as part of RK-Bro.

I just had a neck fusion done last week and it's rough as hell...my surgeon told me that back fusions are far harder to recover from...

Why is this not a RNN update?
More importantly why hasn't that been ripped off? (More often of it has been)

That's a really rough injury. Hope he's able to make it back eventually.

Really sucks, RK Bro was special, and I feel like this injury just made WWE never tale the belts off the Usos and that just sucks for many other reasons
Hope Randy heals up and still has a career left.

I remember him saying 6-12 months ago that he wanted to break the record for the longest consecutive full-time career in WWE. As in not a part-time schedule. Still working weekly TV and house shows. A guy in his position could have easily cut back 5 years ago but he wanted to stay full-time. If he manages to make it back from this I don't think he'll have a choice in the matter though. He should just be doing PPVs and occasional big TV match with plenty of breaks. Basically Edge's current schedule.
I'm wondering who actually did work the full-time schedule the longest if it isn't already Randy. He was at 20 years. I don't think Undertaker even made that. He was already a special attraction by around 2009. Cena was 2002-2015 before going part-time. Bret also did around 13 years from 84-97. The Miz is at around 15 years or so. The likes of Mysterio/Jericho/Goldust probably have a lot of years combined but not consecutive as they left the company and came back.
The crazy thing is he started so young that despite being around for 20 years he could still take 2-3 years off to heal and he'd still only be in his mid 40s if he returned.

Started working full time in 1995 as Issac Yankem and didn't stop being a regular until I think about 2017.

Dude’s also like the only person that has over 1,000 televised WWE/WWF matches. Orton at the moment is close to 900 or so.

This is the kind of injury that can seriously affect your quality of life. Wrestling might be out of the question.

Damn, yeah this is an injury that very well may end his career or very least limit him. He got past the 20 year mark and was able to celebrate that and have one of the more better runs in his legendary career
If he does come back it needs to be very limited but it should not be whoever long it takes. He's only 42 years old so quality of life comes first over everything

As a fan of the guy more or less since he’s been in WWE this is shit news. I know he’s had his issues in his early years and they shouldn’t and haven’t been glossed over as Randy has admitted he was a pain in the ass in documentaries(which to me is a big step), and yes I know people called him Randy boreton because he at times didn’t seem to care which he didn’t but it speaks to his natural talent that even at half speed he was amazing in the ring. The RKBRO stuff was amazing. I hope he gets one more match so he gets to write the final chapter to his in ring career as he deserves it.

Considering how much he loves Edge and Christian and has watched their comebacks I can see him not giving up on eventually coming back even if it is 10 years from now to do one final match

Feels like if you need back fusion surgery then you should probably call time on your full time career as a wrestler. He can still come back for special occasions or in a couple of years for one final run but that is a quality of life affecting injury.

It's the type of injury that, especially for Orton, would make even special appearances difficult.
Everyone is gonna want to see an RKO- and what does he land on to hit it? And The Punt isn't exsctly a babyface legend move.
Here'a hoping he can heal well enough to make a brief comeback to establish a low-impact finish so he can still comfortably make special appearances.
