Royal Rumble 2023, I can hear it now: "We'd like to thank Metallica for their song Lux Eterna..."

I wonder what Metallica would have sounded like at their peak with a different drummer.

It's about what one would expect from Metallica at this stage in their career.
Nothing worth getting excited over, but they seem energized and I'm sure the die-hards will love it.

Last two albums were a return to their roots and this sounds no different.

I wonder what Metallica would have sounded like at their peak with a different drummer. There's footage on Youtube of them playing on stage with Dave Lombardo and backstage with Charlie Benante. Not at their peak but it gives you an idea.

We live in a world where Metallica released a new song and album announcement before Avenged Sevenfold who also released their last album on 2016

Last two albums were a return to their roots and this sounds no different. BACK TO OUR ROOTS, THESE SONGS ARE LONG AND THERE ARE FAST PARTS, WHICH AUTOMATICALLY MEANS THAT THEY'RE GOOD!

That was pretty good. Pretty similar to the first single from the last album Hardwired. Hopefully they can follow it up with a consistent album which unfortunately Hardwired wasn’t.

I always wonder how good Metallica would have been if they hired Hulk Hogan as bassist

Not at their peak but it gives you an idea. I believe you can find footage of the gig they did with Joey Jordison filling in for most of it, and wow...what an insane difference. I've been a drummer my entire life, grew up around other drummers and musicians, and I have NEVER been able to figure out what it is people see in Lars. People always point to his early work, which was ok, but there were other guys out there doing that same style even better, including the 2 guys you already mentioned.

One of my best friends is a drummer and she says she's got a soft spot for Lars because of how generally simple his stuff is, which made it good introductory material when she was learning how to play. As for this song...eh. Then again I wasn't blown away by Hardwired's title track either and that album ended up being okay so who knows?

I'm not a musician so I can't speak on that aspect. But as a listener, Lars' drumming on early material was powerful and memorable, like every beat had a purpose. It's hard to explain.
Newer stuff, though? Yeah, it's not all that great.

It is the best non-cover song I have heard from Metallica since And Justice for all. And still not good enough to get me to buy their albums.
I get why they got huge, glad they got a huge fanbase. But I'm that old dude that is till "first 4 albums and that is it"
