I've really just never particularly had it in me to have much sympathy for people who play games for a living in general? Like cool, you get paid to do what people do for free everywhere while not having any actual measurable effect on a game's success because routinely you get stuff like Mortal Kombat that has virtually no tournament presence but makes massive amounts of money regardless yet expecting companies to throw you money for it for some reason. I kind of just see the whole eSports thing as a weird dumb eccentricity that's volatile by its very nature and foolish to try to make a living off of. Like this other force strong-arming them into being shut down sucks and all but I'm also just kind of like, "Yeah, this shit happens in this scene all the time, it's not good but that's what you signed up for." I have some of the same feelings when a professional athlete holds out for $100 mil instead of $50 mil. But both they and these Smash players have spent a lot of time working on the craft with the expectation that the forum to practice it will be there, and to just have the rug pulled out from under them is pretty shitty.

Nintendo put out a statement on the subject - Them saying they told them they didn't have to cancel the 2022 tournament does kind of add an interesting wrinkle to this. What does Nintendo mean by them saying they didn't need to cancel? When Smash was on the MLG circuit, Nintendo didn't technically ban the games from happening but they did ban any TV coverage or recording from happening at them. So is Nintendo talking about the broadcast or just the tournament itself?

I'm guessing there's a lot more financial support involved with having an officially licensed Nintendo tournament than unlicensed.

Short version: Its more corporate skullduggery bullshit basically lol ETA: Oh wait, this is a NEWER Nintendo statement, not the one that appeared on Kotaku I'm pretty sure that what I posted here still stands though idk. They're still playing with words.

And with professional athletes, there's the fact that even the biggest stars are not as rich as the owners. And Smash is a much different situation because Smash players are not making that kind of money, so the gap in wealth and power between them and Nintendo/Panda is even larger here.
