In the 90s and early 2000s, the majority of comedy films were mainly rated PG-13. But now, most comedy films released (at least the ones that get a wide release) are now R rated. While I understand that this can be seen as a good thing for fans of more mature comedy, PG-13 comedies did serve a good purpose as a way for younger kids to enjoy comedy films that werent just cutesy family films. Maybe it's the fact that streaming provides more options, but there needs to be something for an audience who arent kids but not yet teens but dont care for superhero or action films.

Until these f***ing super hero movies finally die, you won’t get any decent comedies. Whether R or PG-13.

Rob Scheider was a semi-popular comic actor. UNTIL ONE DAY!!!
He started spewing anti-vax bulls*** and no studio wanted to hire him for anything outside cameos in Adam Sandler movies.
Rob Scheider is NOT WORKING!
(Rated PG-13)

I can only hope so.
PG-13 became the go to for comedies that tried to push the envelope without risking losing a portion of their audience.

They occupy a difficult space. It's not that it can't work, but they often appear toothless next to rated R comedy.

I think industry folk are still hesitant after a giant slate of PG-13 comedies starring YouTube influencers and Vine/TikTok personalities all got stuck in development hell for a few years in the mid-2010s after the talent involved showed they either couldn't match their small screen talents on the big one or proved to be one PR debacle after another. Went from the only way to have a movie profit from pre-sales alone around 2015/2016 to being a giant series of debacles.
EDIT: And this coinciding with Deadpool being a massive success showed people were willing to spend a bunch of money on R-Rated movies which previously were thought to have a much lower ceiling.

They will probably make a comeback. The success of the Hangover was seen as a return of r-rated comedies. All it takes is one hit and Hollywood will chase that trend. It might just be a dry period for a while.

Inclined to think so.
I remember me and my amigos seeing most of the stupid PG-13 comedies that came out when we were between 12-18 because we liked movies and there wasn’t a whole lot else to do in Flower Mound, Texas at that age.
Kids these days have a ton more entertainment options, and maybe I’m overrating them but I think they’ve got better taste as well. They can get their fill of poorly made, time killing content on YouTube for free, they don’t need to pay a studio and sit quietly for it.
If a really good one gets made maybe it’ll find an audience, but how often is “really good” applied to a PG-13 comedy?

I'm doubting it. The way it's like now studios either go for the big franchise or Oscar bait. That's it.

I get the backlash against the over-saturation of superhero movies, I really do, but it all starts to sound like "That thing you like SUCKS, and it's DUMB, and you should FEEL BAD for not liking TRUE ART!!" rhetoric after a while.

I get it as well. I love the MCU, but I totally understand why people hate it.

I get it, but coming into a thread like this putting the sole blame on 1 company and it's kind of film, little OTT, like, there are other reasons.
These things go in cycles, the actors who were a big part of those comedies are getting up there in years and their replacements are doing stand up, getting TV/streaming series, there hasn't been that new crossover comedy superstar.
The kinds of jokes too, a lot of them relied on cheap, vulgar humour which you can get 1000 times a day on youtube now with less limits on taste and censorship.
As other people have said, because R rated movies have proved they can be successful, a lot of creators are moving into that bracket instead where they can push things that bit further.
This is not a case of MARVEL RUINS THE UNIVERSE!
There will be a part of that since the 2/3 films they put out a year do take a lot of screens, and they have a ton of jokes in so people can get their comedy fix there, 20 years ago, a lot would be marketed as action comedies rather than superhero movies but that's 1 element amongst many.

Maybe they should try female actresses. I was thinking Mayim Bialik, yeah, she's 46 right now, but she is pretty well known (especially after the Jeopardy gig) and she has experience in comedy. No matter what though, I think we can safely say PG-13 Horror is dead and buried.
