Punk Scrum Thread II: Punk terminated from AEW

The most bizarre thing about all this is Punk's fans on social media seem to think WWE will be desperate to sign him when he's finally released and that the roster would be happy to welcome him.

They seem to have totally forgotten that there's probably more people in WWE who hate Punk than there is in AEW.

Punk is toast. He had to sign a lot of legally binding papers to clear his return and he’s broken the terms of probably all of them.

If TK wavers and simpers “I can change him…” Jericho, Moxley and Omega need to give him a much needed kick up the arse. I’m sure the three of them can think of something.

The money mark at the network is secretly pleased that he has an excuse to throw money at Edge and/or Sasha to get his ex-WWE marquee name for Collision.

What happens to Punk? WWE won’t take him (I’m 99% sure not 100 they have their own unpredictable element in Vince - he hasn’t gone away you know). I think he is so determined to have the last word he will take the pay cut to go to Impact or NWA.

Team Punk (FTR, King maybe one or two others) will be walking on eggshells trying to please both Punk and Khan. They would be well advised to think about who is better for them and their families future.

A few other twists and turns none of us have thought of are coming too.

We’re not at LOLTNA levels but this getting pretty bad.

once that doesn't happen, it'll go to "punk is bigger than wwe" and the ball will continue to be kicked for years, it isn't so bizarre when you realize that fans are indeed fanatics

AEW is really keeping the good, old fashioned, “Sid just stabbed Arn Anderson with scissors” style backstage drama we grew up on alive.

Yeah I wouldn’t call the problems wwe has “backstage drama” and more just evil, horrible shit that Vince and the like have been doing and escalating for years. This aew stuff is just whacky fun.

Yeah one thing I can say regarding the existence of AEW and accepting that they are here to stay (financially) is it has helped me to stop cheering for the companies as if they are single entities or teams against one another and to start cheering for individuals...Claudio and Danielson? Those my dudes and I am glad they are in AEW....Miz? That is my dude and any company would be lucky to have a guy like that on the payroll...Punk is a very hard one for me as I have been a fan since him, hero, colt, and super dragon were stinking up IWA MS in Indiana but as a person? woof

I guess once i stopped personally caring who these people are it was all alot easier to digest (edit: and a whole helluva lot easier to laugh at)

Maybe if this was 1998 and Vince was in full 'rip them apart with my bare hands' mode, but no way he signs WWE signs a guy fired for attacking co-workers in 2023. Even aside from the prior history and clear messaging on WWE not wanting a piece of him, that's just a trouble nobody is going to think is worth it.

I could see HHH trying to bring him back with a short deal and also bragging that "WWE knows how to treat a star" in the sense of telling them "We know how to control his ego unlike you".

Yeah, my opinion on punk is he’s a phenomenal wrestler and a dickhead irl. In an industry that has had a lot of racists, abusers and actual murderers, im not gonna get too bent out of shape that there’s a guy who throws a temper tantrum when things don’t go his way.

Absolutely NOTHING to gain by returning to WWE for either WWE or Punk (Remember it was like RAIIIINNN on his wedding day but I guess FEDEX is better than the Dirt Sheets)

Speaking with Dave LaGreca on Busted Open, Mark Henry and LeGreca discussed the bad publicity AEW was getting coming out of AEW All In due to the reported confrontation between Punk and Perry. LeGreca noted that you don't want to let the bad publicity take away from the historic show. Henry then described how maturity comes with experience and, sometimes, a kick in the behind.

"Maturity comes with experience. Look what we’re talking about. We’re talking about a company that’s still young. My wife told me yesterday, she said, ‘Our kids are awesome, but they’re still kids, and they’re immature. They need grace and guidance and a kick in the ass every now and then.’ I’ve given them grace. Tony’s given them grace. He’s given them guidance. When is the kick in the ass coming? Sometimes, you need it. I had it. Didn’t want it. Didn’t like it. I don’t know if it can be explained any better. Sometimes, you need forgiveness. You always need forgiveness, and you also need a second chance. You need grace. But ultimately, Dave, when you make mistakes, there has to be consequences for your mistakes. Otherwise, you’re gonna do it again because there’s no consequences," Henry said.

LaGreca noted that, as a leader, people will take advantage of you if you're soft. He stated that leaders have to be strong, and they need to know when it's necessary to take things to the next level. Henry emphasized that, sometimes, it's important to make a business decision to get everyone on the same page.

“They’ll manipulate you. You’re thinking, ‘You know what, I get along with this person. They co-sign for my philosophies, and my ideals, and they say, ‘Hey, man, I’m always here for you. Listen, whatever you need, brother, I’m here.’ Then they do all of that, and then they try to turn you against everybody else. That’s manipulation. Sometimes, you gotta be able to say, ‘You know what? This is a business decision. I love you like a brother, but I can’t co-sign for that, and this is what we’re gonna do from here on out.’ Once everybody is in alignment, and you know that, wow, even the number one friend can get disciplined, it’s an awesome thing. Then everybody can run with the understanding that we’re working for the company, we’re working for the business," Henry said.

When LaGreca highlighted AEW's impressive growth, Henry drew a comparison between Tony Khan and Vince McMahon, given their positions with their respective companies. The veteran also made it clear that WWE and AEW can't truly be compared, as WWE had a head start, but AEW's success is evident.

"He’s done stuff that nobody’s ever done. I think the only person that probably has faced what Tony is facing is Vince. They may be the only two conglomerates, like big, big business that have faced those issues. Vince got a 50-something year jump. So you can’t compare the trio because there were things that were ironed out already before Vince Jr. took it. Tony had to eat all of those mistakes. He’s gotta make all of those decisions on the fly, and he’s succeeding. Look at what he’s doing," Henry said.

Henry did not explicitly name Punk or Perry. Likewise, he did not specifically bring up the report that the two men have been suspended following the confrontation.
