He is no Paul Heyman or The Rock too many on the Mic but he is actually not that far behind, if you think about it. My Top have always been like Heyman, Punk, Rock, Piper, Cena. Cena in 2012 basically owned Rock in every Promo they had. Not even Punk had that much power on the Mic against Rock like Cena.

Rock is by far the best for me. But Austin, Jericho, Austin and HHH are all up there.
Cena was good but not on that level IMO. His promos and material were very basic. I'm struggling to remember any memorable promos.

The problem with Cena is that he ended up degenerating into bad comedy and/or his awful nicknames too often. When Cena was serious (and he wasn't doing his eye-roll worthy burials like his claim that Styles' previous victories over him didn't count) he was fantastic. Between the constant jokes and keeping him locked into a certain babyface persona, it felt like we didn't consistently get the incredible mic worker we all knew he was.

He was corny at times, but he had skills that were far superior to anyone else in his era besides Punk and Edge.

Cena was good, but he didn't have the razor tongue to effectively end you ever liking his opponent again the way Punk did.

I tend to find Piper and Punk overrated, as they could be hit and miss, and Punk especially didn't convey much good emotion other than sarcasm.
Hogan in his prime was always good at drawing me in, but he definitely started wanting by the early 90's.

I would put prime Dusty, Savage, 80s Hogan, peak Foley and maybe 99 Rock ahead of Cena. But he’s inside that inner sanctum of mic workers, yes.
One of his promos I don’t think gets enough credit was with Jericho in Boston after their Survivor Series match. He was a perfect contrast defending the fans against Jericho’s snobbery.
Also, the one he had with Vince after the pipebomb pushing for the Punk match.

Cena is good but unfortunately for him he was the guy during the doldrums and twilight of the Attitude/PG years. So he wasn’t always able to truly rip people or talk people into the building.
He’s probably in the second tier directly below the god tier guys ie Dusty, Hogan, Macho, Foley, Rock, etc

I wouldn't say he's The best mic guy (one of them tho) but John Cena's crowd control skills were second to none. I remember when dude got the crowd on his side during a promo battle with Daniel Bryan in 2013 and younger me was salty as f*** LMAO.

Cena without being beholden to "Vince Top Guy" scripts was really damn good on the mic. "Doctor of Thugganomics" Cena was especially good.

Cena was a great talker, but one who heavily varied by quality of material. During the biggest years of his fame I struggle to think of any specific things he said or did that stand out as great, memorable promos, but his delivery was always on it. Some guys can elevate weak material because they commit so hard; I don't feel like Cena ever had quite that knack for it.

What's a micorker? Cena randomly showing up at my house to cork my bottles would be cool.

I remember when dude got the crowd on his side during a promo battle with Daniel Bryan in 2013 and younger me was salty as f*** LMAO. He had to win over crowds so many times. I remember Orton, Stephanie and HHH all trying and failing for like 15 minutes to get the crowd to stop chanting for Bryan and other unrelated stuff during that championship ceremony thing. Then it came to Cena's part and within a minute he had manipulated the crowd into popping for him v Orton when they had just spent an entire segment shitting on the very idea.

When Cena was omn, he was on but the best? He falls right under other WWF top guys such as Austin, Hogan, Savage and Rock.

Nah, no one holds a candle to Prime Ric Flair. I grew up with him in the 80's and dude was on another level. That's always been my standard bearer.

An absolute beast at crowd control as mentioned but for me he was terrible at putting opponents over on the mic especially in later years when he'd just be like "Oh yeah your gimmick is ___ well I know you're actually [real name] and your gimmick is fake and you're fake now respond to me in character or everything you've ever done is meaningless OH YEAH YOU CAN'T SHUT UP BYE" *music plays

In retrospect, Cena could cut a hell of a promo, but at the same, he also had to deliver material like "CM Sucks."

Those are heel traits.
